Sovremenny
« on: July 28, 2012, 01:37:50 pm »

About a year ior so back i got this cheap rtr Heng Tai destroyer which looked like this

after getting it home and doing a little bit of research on the net i discovered it was a Russian Sovremenny class DD
i took out the toy grade electronics and replaced with a 2.4ghz rx , 2 x 10 amp viper esc's , fitted rudders and a decent micro servo and she ended up looking like this

the strange thing is on the box it said 1/115 scale but the dimensions fit the 1/200 scale trumpeter kit  ?
and i have since replaced the rear mast with a scratchbuilt lattice type

Nice job, once you got inside the model I expect :-)
I am fairly sure that the Trumpeter model had something to do with this model, even if only using the general info gained from producing the finer detailed 1/200 scale ( same size ) kit.
We could do with more 'toys' like this to provide a cheap basis for a conversion to a decent RC model. Excellent :-))

thx mate much appreciated  :-))
her is a couple of pics showing the new mast , not perfect by any means but does look a lot better than the stock mast

and the real ship

your right that we could do with more of these cheapy rtr's to help folks who dont have the building skills or time to do models as all that took was a bit of a paint job and decent rc kit
if i had saw it on net i prob wouldnt have got it but my lhs had 1 out on display and i thought that looks horrible but it had a lot of detail on it and thought it would paint up well

Here's a few photos of my Trumpeter Sovremenny if they help you. I built this a long time ago as a static display model, it came with PE Brass fittings as well.

Nice looking model. Was there a reason you didn't paint the decks red ?

Wandering round a Russian Udaloy class destroyer at portsmouth last week, I noticed most decks are now black with the brick red only extending up the lowest 12" of bulkheads, with a white pinstripe between that and the grey of the superstructure. At 1/200 scale I think you could consider leaving the pinstripe off :}
