Magnetic On-/Off-Switch

Has anyone heard of these and if so where can I aquire one from, it would save me having to take the top off my tug

What you're looking for would be a reed switch, a glass enclosed, magnet actuated switch you can fit under the deck or similar and place a magnet nearby and it'll switch your system on. Something like this might do it.....

Another alternative would be to use a rotary switch disguised as a deck fitting, like a bollard.

Hi,

You made need the reed relay to operate a higher current auxilliary relay, if your tug motors pull more than 3 amps.

Most people would only use the reed switch to control the radio system, 3 amps would be ample. The motors should be switched by your ESC/s and not affect the reed switch rating, but using a relay would be advisable is you wire it as Flash has suggested.

You can purchase ready-made magnetic switches from Engel. They sell them for model submarines but they are little bit expensive. You can make a simple one yourself using a pair of reed switches and a bistable relay. The cost is likely to be no more than about £5-£10.

Thank you all for your replies, being a very new newbie to the hobby I think I will stay with the switch until I have a lot more experience and knowledge, I ant arf gorra lot of learning to do
