Arran Mail power plant ?
« on: July 29, 2013, 04:23:36 pm »

I'm about to start my next build and have what i think are two 550 motors in my "come in usefull sometime" drawer.
Will these be suitable to power this vessel?

Shes is 39inch long by 8inch beam, twin propeller, weight as yet unknown, props to be deciced upon if the motors are suitable.

Thanks

Hi Ted
Many years ago i fitted my Arran Mail with 2 545 motors perfect, i later changed them to model motors direct 555 motors on 12v the only reason for changing was i switched everything to 12v to save having too many different voltage batteries kicking around.

Hi Dave thanks for that info .. I take it the 545 and the 550 are similar in performance (I'd run them on 6v) I dont want to go and buy more motoers if I already have suitable ones.... plus what props did you fit?

Ps. how did you find the build of Arran Mail ?

regards

Ted,
Those motors are not similar.
The 550's are used for fast models and 2 will have yours planing.
You can gear the motors or use a less hot motor.

Hi Ted
Bob is right the 550 motors are meant for faster boats even on 6 volts they will be too much, it was quite some time ago i built my Arran Mail if i remember rightly i fitted 40mm props.
I've just been up to my workshop and i have a box full of motors i bought from a friend who had to give up the hobby i have a few brand new 545 motors if you pm me your address you are welcome to a couple.
All the best Dave

Is this the one? This model is owned and built by one of our club members, Peter Barlow. It is powered by only one motor, and performs very realistically.
