The Edmond Fitzgerald
« on: October 17, 2012, 07:19:55 pm »

Dear All,

Until very recentlyI knew nothing of this Late vessel and her Crew, and their sad fate.

Apart from what can be gleaned from the I.Net in a brief search, what else might be known?

Regards, Bernard

Dear Umi,

Many apologies for not 'recognising'/acknolwedging. To such a high profile person, it was very wrong of me.

Thankyou. Regards, Bernard

There was a TV documentary on the subject a while back, The wreck was located, and marine accident investigators drew their conclusions, but at the end of the day, the secret of what actually happened remains with those who lost their lives and we will never know for certain.......

Dear Nick,

Well, umm, maybe I should know about this, and maybe I did, but, whatever, I forgot. Now, since it has been jogged, I am going to do something about it, and something has indeed been done. Not to solve anything, but just 'memory'. If what I have in mind works I will Post.

That Gordon Lightfoot song sure was a good'un but "The Mistress of Storms" by Brian Burns is a great song too.
Here it accompanies some rare photos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nuOunVuqPg&feature=related
Amazing how often beautiful music is linked to tragedy.

It was a major story here in Canada & a very big mystery too. Gordon Lightfoot is the dean of folk balads here in Canada & has recorded a lot of Canadian history in song. It was & still is one of the worst shipwrecks ever to happen on the great lakes. John (oldiron) should be able to tell us a lot about it, he lives near there, how about it John, Mick B.

I wouldn't call Gordan Lightfoot a high profile person,... but the Edmond Fitzgerald sank when
I was young, and it was National News, that a ship of such size would disappear on a "lake".
Fresh water sea would be a better discription. There were annual memorials and news stories for years.
And it still holds a somewhat legendary status to this day.

Hi Bernard

http://www.maritimehistoryofthegreatlakes.ca/GreatLakes/Documents/Scanner/ will keep you occupied, but a quick search gets you
http://images.maritimehistoryofthegreatlakes.ca/results?q=Edmund+fitzgerald&st=kw plenty to follow up on I would think.

Many of the Great Lakes fishing vessels are very interesting too

Re GF he is well known in the UK too Mick and see his works at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Lightfoot_discography

I subscribe to the "Secret Canadian Invasion of the United States" conspiracy theory.  :}

Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Donald Sutherland, ..

Thank you Umi, few Americans know much about their neigbour to the north, even your Sectary of State accused Canada of allowing the 9/11 terrorists access through Canada only to find later that your own people issued them their visas. Not many Americans know either that you get more oil from Canada than you do from Saudi Arabia. However that is a discussion or debate for another day, Mick B.

Hi U33, a lot of Gordons songs are like that. Notable ones are "The early morning rain" & Canadian Railroad Triology" he is one of the very few singers that can bring your emotions into the music. I should say that one of the best atributes of this forum is the way it opens up new horizions for us & generally is not steeped in a dogmatic way on one subject. Some of our members miss the point that it creates a very social forum as well. Most however are aware that it has a spill over effect & that can only be good for us all. I now have many very good friends on here that I would have never known without this forum. Martin does a very difficult job on our behalf & I must say he does it very well. What would we be without music & the artists that continue to intertain us, Mick B.

My Wife --who worked at our local Airport in the late 1970's --saw Lightfoot sitting in the near-empty Lobby, waiting to be flown out the morning after having given a Sold-Out Concert which we had both attended.  She stopped and stared; he winked at her, and when she asked if he was the Man we'd heard singing the night before, grinned and replied that "he might be".  She sat beside him and they had a little chat about Folk Music; then he very graciously signed the scrap of paper she thrust at him.  My Wife had to get back to work so they shook hands, and she begged Lightfoot to "just keep on singing", and he promised her that he would try to.  That promise he, now lean and aging, has kept despite  Bell's Palsy, a near-fatal Gastric Aneurism,  and a Minor Stroke that required him to hire another Musician to play "Lead Guitar" until he himself could handle that big 12-string Martin Guitar  properly again!
