More Visible LEDs
« on: May 09, 2007, 01:35:19 pm »

I have been trying to locate a previous posting concerning various methods of adjusting the light output of LEDs but cannot find it. My blue strobe lights are very bright but only when viewed end-on, which is fine for helicopters and low flying aircraft  ::). The posting I'm thinking of gave various ways of getting a more "rounded" display but I can't remember what they were.  Any suggestions?

For all round illumination
Take a piece of fine sandpaper and frost the outside surface of the glass. This will difuse the light in all direction. You can also now buy frosted LED.

For broader spread of light, i.e. beem of about 120-150 degrees
Read this somewhere
Paint LED complelty with whitepaint, to act as a reflector.
Then paint black to cover.
When paint is dry, sand off the top of the LED, and it will throw a wider beam. And with a painted exterior it will look more like a standard light.
