One possibility is to spray your model with the chosen gloss colour, and then finish with a light matt or satin varnish. If you check some of the plastic modellers websites, you will see that they often paint military models (or area of the model) with a gloss finish prior to applying decals. I believe that it helps the decals to adhere and also 'loses' transluscent edge. Then the gloss paint and decals are overcoated with a matt or satin overcoat to get the appropriate military scheme.

Another alternative is to take your Humbrol to a paint shop, so thay can match the desired shade, but mix it as a matt or satin version for you.

Yes.  Matt paint does seem to brush on and cover better and look smoother.  I never thought of Satin varnish afterwards.    :-))

Cheers

Nowadays, getting the exact colour from Humbrol has become a matter of trial and error - doing my USN minesweeper last year caused a few trips to the shop before the finished results matched whet the colour charts led me to expect.  The colour on the tin lid didn't help that much, either.  It is nice to know that in the Peoples Republic, colour blind people are sure of a job...... :((

I have 2 tins of emerald green Humbrol that were bought at the same time but are noticably different colours.

After I have finished the kits I have started using enamels I'll be moving over to Tamiya Acrylics as the colours seem to be more consitent

Having visited my local Model Zone shop (they only sell Revell paints) I was given a Humbrol paint chart which is very useful, but even more useful on the back of the chart was another set of charts showing Humbrol equivalents from other manufacturers, ie European, Games Workshop, Gunze Sangyo, Xtra Colour, Lifecolor, Vallejo, Revell, RLM, Federal Standard, Tamiya, Testor  and US Federal Standard.
Mind you having checked one equivalent with Humbrol/Revell there was quite a difference from the tin lid colours between the two.
But the chart is useful and free!
