just click on the report to moderator and the mods will get an email, then hopefully be able to do something about it. in one astronomy forum we did our best to space the mods round the world so that there was a good chance one of them would be around at any one time, as one of the uk mods it usually fell to me to mod the russian spam that appeared in the early hours, most was taken down within about an hour of it being posted. in the end the admin totally banned all registrations with a .ru email address as stats showed that 100% of registrations from that country were spammers. there was a quarantine zone that all spam was moved to (to preserve the users ip etc, and the user was blocked from posting - pending the admin doing a ban and blocking their source ip address from re-registering.

Perhaps the registration process has to be tightened up with mandatory questions/answers to eliminate spammers. O0 O0

For instance I know of several sites that if you do not provide a legitimate email address from an ISP, which exludes, hotmail, gmail, yahoo etc, you are refused membership and they say up front, because it is to reduce spam. :-)) :-))

After all doesn't everyone have an ISP provided email address, so why not use it to register for this forum. {:-{ {:-{

The other system often used is that as part of the sign-up procedure
the prospective member has to supply a valid email address to which a
code is sent.

the code must then be re-entered on the forum to confirm the membership

I can see at least 30 new registrations I would delete, I can only assume that Auto Registration has not been turned off yet, many settings have defaulted back to set up.

Martin will get there,. Keep at it..

Ken, I know your pain - been there done that in other forums, if you have a moderators section of the forum (hidden from anyone but moderators) you can have a section there to move spam into to be dealt with (it also gives the moderators an area not visible to the members where mods can discuss things privately) worth considering anyhow.

ah but if you just delete them they can rejoin under a different name and continue, once deleted you cannot find their ip address, their email or any other information, to stop them returning you need to add their details to a blacklist that the forum will compare every new user against, which will mean that their ip address, email etc cannot be used again to register on the forum.
there are a lot of little things that moderators and the admin do for a forum that goes on behind the scenes, depending upon their user rights, one forum was set up so that only the admin could ban the users and add their info to the blacklist, so all spammers posts were dropped into quarantine and their posts set to moderation, so they couldnt post anything new.
actually setting the so they cant post but not deleting their account can sometimes prevent them re registering again - depending upon forum settings.

Once you are banned you cannot get back on using the same IP address.

Been there, tried that.

To most of us Normal members and Dicky D  :}  banning can be a problem however I believe that there are programs available which will create new IP Addresses for you, also some very basic text to change them and to hide them, No idea if they are affective.

Sorry about that chaps.

Since upgrading the version of the Forum software, we have been under the biggest sustained attack since Mayhem start. >>:-(

Right Now there 69 member waiting to join and 74 since yesterday... only one wasn't flagged up and obviously he got through!

Looks like I may have to increase the registration security again.

Yes.  %%
Yes. They then go through a 'Spam Checker'... which is only as good as it is!  {:-{

I might have sussed it though.... registration security (anti-bot) wasn't switch on
by default in the new software!
