Ladder and rail materials
« on: October 28, 2012, 12:47:36 pm »

While I feel confident in building the rails etc. for my 1/24 scale P200 patrol boat I am stuck on what material to use as I want it to look like stainless steel.

If using brass rod is it possible to have these small items bright nickel plated, if so will the plating take to the soft soldered joints ?
Is it possible to solder stainless rod ?

Any help or advice on how to get a convincing finish for a larger scale model would be realy appreciated

Thanks,
MM

it's possible to silver solder stainless steel...........have done it myself on several occasions............but I haven't a clue about having it plated..........I know that guys in the states regularly have small items both nickel and chrome plated, but I wouldn't have a clue as to who would do small items over here.

Would a P200 have had stainless rails and ladders?

Sorry guys I should have typed P2000, an Archer class patrol boat used mainly by University's. All the fittings on these craft are of stainless steel.
I will certainly try silver soldering ( thanks Neil ) unless anyone knows a plating company in East Anglia.

You can soft solder stainless steel using your usual soft solder and phosphoric acid.

Thank you both for the help I will first try to solder as 'boat captain' suggests. If I can make this work then problem solved, if not  then plating brass.

Thanks Gentlemen
