Anybody know where this is ?
« on: November 07, 2012, 05:20:56 pm »

 :embarrassed:

Just emptied a very old 35mm colour film out of my Canon
A1 SLR before shipping all my 35mm and 6x6 film gear down
to the local sale room.

Took the film in, and had it processed and printed.

As far as I can tell from the other pictures they were
all taken in about 1998, bit one picture of a thatched
building has me foxed (yeah, yeah, advancing age and
failing memory etc. etc.).

It was definitely in the UK, and may be somewhere centred
on Sheffield where I was living at the time.

I have attached a picture of this building in the hope that somebody
might know what/where it is. Can somebody will put me out of my
misery/confusion.

It may be helpful to post a few shots either side on the negative. This may be other locations in the area, and increases the chances of a hit.

Just a suggestion.
, hope you don't mind

TigerTiger,

Don't mind at all - it's a good suggestion. Immediately before the picture I posted
yesterday was a shot of the gable end of the house, and before that there were photos
of a kit car show and track day at Donnington. Immediately after was a photo of a shallow
water fall with a heron - I have posted copies of both below (hopefully!)

I have been racking my brains (what's left of them!) and I seem to remember that the
house is now set in a small park and was used by either, a composer or a writer to work
in - bit a like a second home.

I think it was probably built at the turn of the 20th century i.e. Victorian or Edwardian
possibly for somebody like Edward Elgar or Arthur Conan Doyle. I also have a vague
memory that this particular person had one or possibly two daughters with Scottish
sounding names.

I shall go and do a bit of googling when I have posted this.

Richard

I am having real problems submitting this reply - (keep getting a mass of SQL Errors)

I shall try just the text portion first and then put the pictures as attachments on a separate post

Hi Richard, Despite all the clues being wrong, you were bang on! :}

The building is not near Sheffield, Donington, or even in the UK...  ...Not the home of a composer, playwright, or an author either, but that of a Lord and Lady...

It's actually The Swiss Cottage, located at Kilcommon near the town of Cahir, South Tipperary in Ireland and was built around 1810.

More to the point, how did Richard take the photo if he was supposed to be in Sheffield at the time.....

At least they change the people standing at the side from time to time given that everything else is identical.

OK OK its my fault!  yes it is Cahir in Ireland . . . .

I went over there in 1998 or 1999 on holiday for a week with a
group from Scarborough - I had assumed that it would be the UK
since normally I always used a little RICOH compact camera when I
travelled, so as to keep the airline luggage weight down (at that time
I was doing a lot of work in Europe and the States).

The film came out of a Canon A1 SLR so I guessed it would be a UK
location. Obviously a coach and ferry holiday meant that I could go
fully 'tooled up' (photographically!)

The other thing I always used to do was 'runout' the film at the end
of a holiday so that I could collate all the photos - on this occasion
since I had only used 2-3 frames at the start of a 36 roll film I didn't
bother (or forgot!) . It was also about that time that I started
working a lot of overtime so the photography fell by the wayside a bit.

If I remember correctly I switched to my first digital camera then, so
that's why the film had remained undeveloped until now.

Like DickyD says, how did you find it out Andy ? - I'd love to know!

Thanks for giving me a little bit of my sanity back!

Hi Guys,

The mission was accomplished as a result of combining a couple observations from the photo, with a 'Google Image' search, and a generous helping of luck!

I wasn't convinced that the location was Sheffield-ish for a couple of reasons, I had an issue with the colour of the stone used for the chimney stacks and was curious about the lattice-work which had me thinking 'Celtic'.
However, with only the photo and recollection to go on, I did several searches using the word 'Thatched' plus one of the following: Sheffield, Yorkshire, Chatsworth, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Cottage, House, Timbered, Rustic, National Trust, Chocolate Box, plus a couple more.
I got plenty of similar results, but the mystery house remained conspicuous by it's absence.

From the description preceding the additional photo,s suggesting the possibility that the house may have been owned by someone of note, I had a ponder before modifying my search parameters slightly and combined 'Thatched' with each of the following; Bronte, Tolkien, Author, Composer, Writer, Poet, Playwright.

When I entered the 'Thatched Playwright' search, the results turned up several small images of the building in question.

If you haven't already done so, I recommend doing
an internet search for 'The Swiss Cottage Tipperary', and spend a few minutes checking out the interior as well as the exterior - I would imagine that a visit in real life would be quite a memorable experience, but then again...  ...eh?, Richard?!  ;) :} {-)

Great I tried all that except the Bronte, Tolkien, Author, Composer, Writer, Poet, Playwright bit.

Well done Andy.

Andy,

Thanks for the 'How I Did It' info - I have already had a look
at the various Swiss Cottage Sites turned up by Google.

I tried the  'Thatched Playwright' search but didn't turn up any
images - did I not look far enough?

Your comments about the chimney stonework are interesting,
do you have a background or interest in architecture - I must
admit that I missed that one.

Having managed to answer questions similar to this one for
other people, it gives one quite a 'buzz' when you manage to
turn up the info, but this one had me foxed!

As for a  'visit in real life being quite a memorable experience',
ISTR my father and myself being dragged to see the place by
my mother and sister!  Despite that I did find it quite interesting
when I got there! - generally I preferred sampling the Guinness!

Another Challenge : I have googled for this place in Cornwall
without success - I suspect that with the right keywords somebody
might turn up something.

Romiley house - A fantastic B&B, north of Truro I believe (although I may
be wrong on that given my past record in these matters!) - it was built
by the owner or manager of one of cornwalls mines. Not sure of the spelling of
the Romiley, it may be Romily, or Romilley. went there in the mid 1990s.

Think I still have my one of these somewhere laying about, as I recall it cost an arm and a leg (£50!) when I got it for christmas many moons ago.

Now have a couple of compacts, Canon 900Ti, and 1000HS along with 40D and 5D Mk1 SLRs which all cost somewhat more than £50.

Richard

I used 'normal' Google (not Chrome) with 'Safe Search' turned off, so no filtering, and conducted the searches using 'Images' not website links.
The first time I noticed any pictures of The Swiss Cottage was when I ran the 'Playwright' search, when it appeared about a third of the way down the on 'Page 8'. I still had a few ideas for searches to try, e.g. 'Retreat', 'Folly', Master Thatcher websites, etc...

I don't have a background in Architecture, but kept thinking about the dry-stone walls and buildings in the Matlock, Buxton area which as I recall are golden, not grey. This, along with the lattice-work, had me thinking of a possible Welsh or South-West location.

As for the 'buzz', yes I'm really pleased to have found it for you, but doesn't make you realise what an incredibly powerful invention the internet is?

both my dad and I had zenitt E's he dropped his 20 foot off a pier onto rocks while photographing ferries at portsmouth, when we clambered down and retrieved it we found the only part he had broken was the light meter. great cameras - solid, but great.
I have since gone digital, with a canon 20d but have got adaptors and use old manual camera lenses with adaptors in manual mode, a lot cheaper when you already have the lenses.
