Plastic glue / weld
« on: November 08, 2012, 02:43:02 pm »

Hi,

I'm currently using plastic weld, DCM, dichloromethane, Methylene Chloride whatever you want to call it, with which I have been very happy since it discovered it as an alternative to superglue.

I know that others use MEK, Methyl Ethyl Ketone as another weld.

I am about to buy some more, and am considering a bulk purchase which makes it considerably cheaper so I was wondering if anyone had experience of using both and if so whether they had an preference for one or the other?

I suspect like most things, it will fall to personal preference, but I may be wrong, it has been known!

 {-) {-) {-) {-)

Honestly, I was once.

 :-))

On an aside, I tried to spell check the first run of this message and it totally disappeared and hence new version. Presuming I did something and it's not a glitch with the new format webpage?

This is the one I use.

Liquid solvent cement 500ml
Ref. Code: AM00003
Solvents dissolve a thin film of each surface to be joined forming a welding joint
£10.20 inc. VAT[
Same quantity in Plasweld would be about 25-£30.

For ABS I prefer MEK, for polystyrene and acrylic it'd have to be DiClo.

Thanks gents,

looking about £4.7/L DiClo and £9.5/L MEC, certainly pays to buy bulk!

EMA models also do that one Dicky at £6.50 plus p&p ordered 4 last time as postage was expensive but same cost as one, as it has to be sent by special deliver classed as toxic.

No you have done nothing wrong, we have all been there, it is the new setup.
It hasn't been explained but the first post you spell check disappears after you active the pop up.

I was always told for security, to never activate pop ups.

However we know Mayhem is reputable so..

In Oz the pipe cleaner is for PVC pipes so hopefully we are looking at the same material.

I had a factory for many years where we sprayed polyurethane foams and hardcoats. MEK was one of the solvents we used and now fortunately, thanks to strict California legislation it has been just about phased out and superceded by safer products.
The reason I mention this is that MEK can be absorbed through the pores of the skin from just the vapour let alone contact. It attacks the central nervous system and is carcinogenic.
Always wear gloves when using it latex ones are no good as it goes almost straight through, neoprene are better.
Pretty much the same applies to acetone. If you buy these solvents you should be issued with a data sheet which tells you the hazards involved in using them.

its likely to be a gel adhesive for pvc pipework, - if it has metyl eythl ketone in its ingredients then yes it will stick styrene

I went to Wicks's store and asked for pipe weld.  I was escorted to the locked cupboard where they had a paste like substance ??

I assumed we are looking for a runny fine liquid. if so, what does it look like and what it's makers name and all that stuff.

Cheers

Yes it will but if you use to much it will melt styrene.

If you only need a small amount why not buy a small bottle of plasweld.

The pipe weld is a gloopy substance. Thinner/Cleaner is the liquid MEK. Might pay to visit a smaller plumbers merchant.

Ebay for both MEK and DiChlo, both reasonable in larger quantities, especially if you can share it with someone.
