World record at Coniston Speed Week
« on: November 12, 2012, 08:56:41 am »

Just catching up with news from the Lake Districts annual speed bash, now held on Coniston Water.  The Peters & May unlimited hydroplane  U-11 broke the world 1 kilo record for prop driven boats at 176mph with one pass at over 180mph.  J.W.Myers driving.  To what it looks like onboard at those speeds go to http://.www.h1unlimited.com/2012/09/11-peters-may-to-england./    Edit: link doesnt seem to work, google it.

I was hoping for a new RC world record... it is still held by Joerg Mrkwitschka using nimh-cells.

Tell us more Pierre.  Where and when etc, with pictures or a link if possible.   Is there an event for straight-line speed?   The Indianapolis club in USA used to hold such an event in the 1970s.

This is what I found (a.o.)
http://www.drcwebservices.com/lasaw/pictures2006.htm
The pictures above showing Joerg and his record boat. After a few searches on the internet I couldn't find something faster than his RC Boat. I am not sure if theoretically this record can ever be broken... perhaps using quantum-physics  :-)) .

The hydros I saw in the 70s were all nitro powered outrigger "Crapshooter" hulls using very high nitro content fuel, 60% in some cases.   Highest speed  was high 90 something , they didnt make the magic 100mph mark.  There is a famous Youtube clip of an electric model on a public park that they claim was worlds fastest. They got one, (I think they said 130mph) run in before being moved-on by the police.  Another Youtube clip showed a rocket propelled rigger going VERY fast on UK lake but it destroys itself on a second run.   BTW Pierre I was in your area last week for ten days on holiday, GAP.

Officially this is the fastest (I could find):

Personally, I am happy with 40MPH  :-) .

PS Hope you enjoyed your stay! Did you take an RC Boat of your's with you?

Yes that electric one was the one that the police told to pack-up. Very impressive speed, frightened the ducks !!!!    No boat with me this time but Red Oktober was up the Zugspitze to Rifflsee then had a sail on the Eibsee a few years ago. (see Red Oktober`s world tour in Springer Tugs section)  I always enjoy trips to Bavaria , and the beer. {-)

Don't think so..... That video is from Legg Lake in the US and shot during an official SAW event. The record is as with full size boats, over a measured course, electrically timed and with the average of two runs in opposite directions. Both NAMBA and IMPBA run a number of SAW events each year.

Is there an event for straight-line speed?

Both the BMPRS and the MPBA Fast Electric section hold straight line speed events on Branston Water, Staffordshire - the home of the Burton & District MBC.

You are right W3bby, my mistake. <:(          BarrieW, any reports or pictures from that Burton and District MBC  event ?  What speeds are we getting this side of the Atlantic ?    The tethered hydros are very rapid, what about R/C.

I wonder if there are kits on the market to get started... I like the concept of fast boats on the water (, Bavarian Beer and lots of Bavarian Women  :-)) ).

Here are this years Fast Electric results - http://www.mpba-fes.org.uk/saws/saws2012.htm
I can probably find some I/C speeds from the years I was a member of Burton MBC.

I've checked my back issues of the BDMBC newsletters and can' find anything. However, I'm sure there are members of BMPRS on here who will be able to fill you in ;)

Is there anyone on this forum that also actually builds these SAW-boats? Looks fun to me!

Lots of kits for "fast electric" but I dont think any in the world record category, Crapshooter (USA) used do kits.  One member on here is producing very nice F1 style tunnel hulls for Zenoah petrol engines.  Looks fast, goes fast, not exactly cheap way of starting in model boating.  How about a Springer with a beer barrel barge to get you started ?

Pierre,  Modell Werft  magazine in your country has a full build article on the Springer kit by Aeronaut .   It will get your feet wet.   Of course you must also make a barge for the beer barrels !

I already have a bait-boat loaded with beer when I go fishing  ;) . Is there any kit on the market you know of, for the 2845/3D from Leopard Hobby. I apologize for starting the opposite way... first bought the motor, should have first picked out a nice boat of course. What is the fastest type of boat anyway? (apart from the rocket-type  :} )
PS Thanks for the suggestion... I know of Aeronaut. I just checked their website and noticed the 'Manta'... it is a roundnose I believe.

Astec models in the UK supply free plans that include scale or semi-scale hydroplanes including round-nose types. Easy build.   Worth a look for fittings too.  The "rocket boat" is/was an  "outrigger".
