Yangteze Gunboat - HMS Sandpiper
« on: November 14, 2012, 12:24:17 pm »

Does anybody know where to obtain a plan of the Sandpiper or one of her class - apart from the Maritime Museums horrifyingly costly one ? Have about 5 pictures collected over the years and a Chris Mayger book cover from one of Douglas Reeman's books (probably the clearest illustration of the lot), but no drawings at all

I could construct a model from these sources , but with great difficulty and lots of inaccuracies. Presume she had twin tunnel props similar to the Insect Class and 3?or 6? pounder guns. Sampans shown instead of the normal ships boats. Seems to have the usual stern facilities for the crew........ and armoured shutters for the enclosed bridge.

Read that she was handed over to the Chinese in 1949 (from an illustrated  book on Gunboats), wanted to know what became of her eventually, presumably scrapped?

Grateful for any help with this.

Hi there
I have had her a project plan for a while now.
You could o a lot worse than buying a copy of the film The Sand Pebbles on DVD.
Then doing screen grabs of any images that catch your fancy to develop a set of working plans.
There are good interior shots too, for steam plant layout.
It's the way I'm going. :-))
A bonus is , of course its a very enjoyable film.
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress

Hi redpmg

I have had a similar problem regarding my build of HMS Gnat an Insect class river gunboat. I am not aware of any plans of the Sandpiper but there are several good books out there with some excellent pictures which might not have, try Gunboats of the Royal Navy (pictorial history of all gunboats primarily on the Yangtse)
Gunboats on the great river (history of the RN on the Yangtse) and finally the Osprey book of Yangtse river gunboats which has some nice pictures of all gunboats on the Yangtse including the Sandpiper.
Interestingly I believe that sandpiper was the only gunboat ever built that drew less draught than her own motor boat!

Thank you to all . Links much appreciated - have checked them out . Will have to order a copy of the Osprey book. Attaching a picture of the boat in question.
