Tug for Tug Towing
« on: November 14, 2012, 05:37:12 pm »

Looking to build a tug for club tug towing being proposed for next year.
I'm looking for something modern, rugged and reasonably powerful.
Suggestions please.

Hi Boss,
Around a metre I would think
200 sqids or thereabouts.
I'll be at Tuggers Den on Sat week and looking at hulls etc.

ned i would recomend something along the lines of a wyforce sized hull built for towing 60mm steerable korts bow thrust working winch but i am in the middle of an mmb tug hull build and it is extremely promising to be even better than my svitzer powerful which has got to be one of the best tug towing tugs about in my view

Poll
I'm a member of Cleethorpes MBA and we were talking down at the lake yesterday (as you do) and one of our members who is into tugs in a big way was bemoaning the fact that without a towing course we might as build any type of model if it's just pootling abut on the water. He joined Balne Moor but found that apart from special days there was not much going on on the days he made the trip from Grimsby.
We have a few tugs in the club but they are the usual Imaras  and suchlike with lots of bits to break off when attempting to tow our 8ft gas tanker.
Ministeve,
I saw Marks (MMB) prototype going through it's paces at Wicksteed in 2010 and I must admit I was impressed with the manoeuvrability. Defo one to think about.
Dave,(Stavros)
Thanks for the offer, but I would like to build from new, rather than have to modify one already started.

MMBs looks pretty good on the water and I have seen a few variations of them..

Ministeve,
Are you using the stock running gear?
Or in the immortal words of Ronald Macdonald
Have you gone Large?  %)

Is there room for a 60 or 70 mm kort without butchering the hull?
What would be the ideal motor to run with a 60 mm prop?

The "small class" is often won by a SPRINGER tug at the FOSS CUP in Bellevue, WA, USA.

We started adding ship towing in 2010 at the Tualatin Crawfish festival, as did Foss, and Burnaby.

I have a springer 540 motor 40mm steerable kort and very much in demand as a rescue boat at the lake.
I also have a modified Dickie tug,but I want to have a reasonably powerful and manoueverable towing tug.

Just tacking this on here as it seems a logical place.
I had been looking for a Hobby Engine Southampton tug, but they seemed to be hard to find - not in stock in many places and a bit pricey when found - circa £135 with delivery.
However, I stumbled onto the "ARCTIC Aqua Rider 703 - Southampton" which appears to be the same beast. Whether it's a clone or someone else (Arctic?) has bought the production I don't know. I just got one via 'Fishpond.co.uk' * for £102 delivered. And it even works, though not tried it in water yet.

( * Reviews I've seen of Fishpond aren't exactly glowing (they are actually just an 'agency') but my order arrived 2 weeks early, so quite pleased. Fishpond said it was from a UK supplier, but there was nothing in or on the box to say who it was.)

  Hi
You could consider MMM Aflon Alaw with there T24 motors or
I think Jackie at Slipway still has a Wyeforce.
good luck

Hi Ned,  why not have a ride across to Balne Moor this sunday 7th July we are having a fun day with a bit
of tug towing thrown in it's there for folk to have a go without breaking any pots, and may give you some
ideas for setting your own pond up.

Thanks for the invite.
