Whoa, just had a 'Back-To-The-Future' moment...
I only wanted to check-out some screen-shots of 'Minecraft' to see what it was about, and had a 18-year flashback!
Although the colours are brighter and there's no gore, the simplistic block graphics and perspective is reminiscent of 'Doom' and 'Doom 2', a couple of games from the early 1990's that were once regarded as state of the art!  O0

MineCraft has a huge following and my grandchildren play it whenever allowed.

You arrive in a virtual world and have to fend for yourself, build a shelter, find food and make ever more sophisticated tools. You live by mining, farming and bartering.

It provides an opportunity to explore, build and discover things for yourself and every aspect of the game can be modded.

Although it is intended for playing on-line as part of large community, you can download the server version and host that on your own machine and the grandchildren then have a private world they can log into across the LAN, or even from home.

There plenty of on-line help, especially on Youtube.

It costs a one off £16.99 to join.

It is entirely untrue that I waste hours on Minecraft, but my enchanted diamond suit of armour is an incredible thing.

I was starting to explain binary half adders to my eldest son (14) a few weeks ago, and he said he'd made them (and other logic gate circuits) in Minecraft.  :o

There's worlds of stuff you can do with it: we watched the elevator youtube video with our jaws on the floor.

(So it's not just "messing about" - I can see it as Lego/Meccano for the 21st century)

I wasn't 'into Doom' either, but a lad from IT had it on his PC, so a great many hours were spent 'in the office'...  %)

Minecraft is NOT like Doom etc.

My two play it for hours.  It's actually quite clever and a bit like a logic puzzle.  You can build anything you like - without limit - provided that you can construct it from the simple block components you are given or can "mine" for yourself.

You combine simple things to make more complex things....for example (I'm guessing here) wood and metal will make you a hammer which in turn allows you to make more complex things again etc etc.

My kids tend to play it in "creation" mode which gives you unlimited materials.  People above have mentioned "survival" mode where you have to start from scratch and find what you need.

There are monsters which wander about and then explode. Rumour has it that they were originally a bug but people liked them.

Nobody has said that it is, have they? - My own comment was that the screen-shots I saw of Minecraft were reminiscent of Doom/Doom 2, and illustrated the observation with the set of images below my reply.

Hmmm. I'm guessing Jack's forgotten his password and logged in pretending to be me {-) , he plays it all the time and is constantly asking me to look at what he's built. I know nothing really about the game other than it's become a bit of an obsession O0 .
