2.4Ghz Radio
« on: May 11, 2007, 08:43:01 pm »

Took delivery this week of my Spektrum DX6 2.4Ghz 6 Channel RC with 10 model memory which I shall be putting in my lifeboat, got it form the US at a cost of £123.00, took just over a week to arrive. :D

It looks like it is based on a JR case, as the charger is - centre pin and not + like Futaba. Now with this set the transmitter has a Globally unique identifier GUID for short which means the receiver will only listen to the transmitter which is done when the RC system is made and with 4.2 billion codes, chances of having any interference for another transmitter are virtually impossible. ;D

You can still have other receivers in other models if you wish all you have to do is use the binging plug to set up the new receiver which is a pick of cake, new 6 channel receivers are about £50.00 which is not to bad as a 6 channel futaba receiver is about the same price.

If you are going to the mayhem weekend I will be there if anyone wants to have a look.

I thought these units wouldn't transmit if they couldn't find a free frequency?

Hi 17-21 & HS 93,

Have a look at the post below for the "before & after" of the mod. on my DX6 set.
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=2017.msg20689#msg20689

I tried sourcing the regulator in the uk but couldnt find it locally so had to order from Dimension in USA.

No problems with set since modification done.

17-21,

Sorry about that. Think its working now.

Anyway, to explain.  The DX6 consumes 270ma of current once switched on which means, if you are using a 600mah battery pack to power the DX6 then you will be lucky to get not much more than 2 hours use before the pack has discharged. A modification (new power regulator) from Dimension eng. in the USA is available and once swapped for the original regulator, cosumption is 120 ma and the same battery pack will now last for approx 5 hours.

Any problems with the previous link and I'll copy and paste the post to here.

To anyone thinking of buying one of these excellent transmitters I would recommend the DX7 as it has a 1500mah battery as standard - don't missunderstand me the DX6 is a brilliant piece of kit !

Thanks for that I have now ordered the regulator, so will do the mode when it arrive, must admit when setting up the lifeboat I did notice how quickly the voltage was going down on the transmitter.

definately Best Thing I Done Was Buy My Mates DX6 Which He Then Took The Spektrum Board out And Put Into A JR Case (Yes Spektrum Are JR Cases) And Now I HAve The Excellent Programming Of JR With The GHZ Frequency Of Spektrum And My Battery Will Last Around The 5hr Mark Before Warning Me About Low Battery level

the only other thing I have found is it is best to run the receiver on 6 volts not 4.8, this maybe because of my running gear in the lifeboat.

Phil

i have to agree with you there as not only does 6v give a better reception but it also will last longer

Thanks Faraday's Cage!  I've had my DX-6 for about a year now and the two hour or so time is a major drag!  I'm going to do the mod, heck, I've already modified the rest of it (just controls, not electronics - steering wheel and dual throttles with "fire button"). - MT

Hi, is the Futaba system as good as the Spektrum? Are there any major differences as I have heard on some systems you need 2 rx's in one model?

Nige,
Can't answer you question directly cuz I don't have the Futaba 2.4 Ghz radio.  I might be able to clear up part of that 2 receivers in one model thingy.  The Spektrum receiver is actually two receivers in one.  One for vertical, the other for horizontal polarization (they change polarizations depending on the attitude of the model).  Does that help?

I've done got myself one of them there Futaba 6EX 2.4ghz doohickeys.

Range is not an issue, it meets or exceeds the best FM systems ie out of range of most human's visual acuity!

The rx has two antennae which need to arranged at 90 degrees from one another - The actual antennae are only 1.25 inches long! Just keep them above the waterline and you're set.

The battery life appears to be a fair bit better than the DX6 out of the box - and higher MAh batts are readily available to make the Futaba system viable as an all day solution.

So far, VERY pleased with my Futaba 2.4ghz 6EX system.

Yes, thanks for that Doc, will keep learning.
I am thinking of buying 2 tx's & as many Rx's as I need, if each handset can hold 10 models it could work out a lot cheaper than a different radio in each model. Would welcome any thoughts on this.

Nige,
Having more than one transmitter is certainly one way to set up for 20 different boats.  It also seems like an expensive way to do it though.  Being naturally frugal (cheap!), I think I would rather transfer the specific settings for each boat to paper, then re-insert those settings when needed.  I can buy a lot of paper and pencils for the price of that second transmitter!  (Not to mention beer to keep me occupied while doing all that writing.)
Then again, if you're really handy with soldering/un-soldering that SMT stuff, you might put a chip socket on that transmitter's memory board and just swap memory chips (yeah, sure, just buy the paper).

Hello,

I contacted Robbie about to see if they were going to produce a F14 Navy with a 2.4GHz rf engine, it seems not  :(

What a shame... If the rf sections can be seperated from the decoders, then there might be a chance of building a hybrid system. Got to get a boat finished first though  :)

If you buy the DX7 it has a 20 model memory to begin with - works out cheaper than two DX6s

Just set up the models for the transmitter.
I run 7 off one transmitter (plus a spare) and the only alteration I need to make is to reverse the steering servo on a few.

The reason for two Tx's is that the wife is also interested and wants to play  :)
The DX7 seems the way forward with a 20 model memory (x 2 = 40 ;D ;D will be divorced before they get filled)
