Imara/Perseverance.
« on: November 20, 2012, 11:40:29 pm »

I know this question has been done to death by previous contributors ......... But, how about an updated version ?

I was about to buy a Sir Galahad kit from Mountfleet ( I love their kits) but ended up with an Imara from a fellow Mayhemer.
I know MMB 900 motors have been recommended for her, but they are no longer advertised. Alistair at MMD might have something if he is still working i guess...... any recommendations gents ?
I know there are problems with the  Imara build ... ive spent the afternoon on here looking them up on this and other forums, any recommendations again gents ?

And finally, im not known for building kits as they are supplied, so i am tempted to "do" Perseverance, again i know there is very limited information on her. Anyone come up with anything new ? was she ever grey ?

I look forward to your comments.

Well that was a quick response.
2 off 900 motors bought from EBay at £12.50 each incl postage.
Any views on the remaining questions ?

as you say there is scant information on her as either Imara or Perseverance, but she did have an enclosed upper wheelhouse when under RN service, aka Perseverance, and she was painted grey in RN colours.
When I built mine as P I built her as I thought, (and purely conjecture as I liked the colours I painted her in) she would look like just post RN service but with upper wheel house removed and reverted back to civilian colours.
as these colours can't be disproved or proven, I am quite happy to say that she looked ok to me.........anyone objecting was quite entitled to show me evidence to disprove, lol

Rob,

Don't forget that the Mountfield fleet and the Caldercraft (Imara) fleet were all designed and built by the same man. The late frank Hinchliffe, so the overall quality should be nearly the same.

Hey Neil, your Imara looks superb. Is she steam driven? If so lets have some more photos of her..

yes........she has twin cheddar puffin engines, oil seperaters and condensers, gas fired with ducted fans, full lighting system........and I sold ( well swapped her) some time ago Barry....got plenty of photos of her, but don't want to hijack this thread.
It's the third "Imara" I have built and the best......got better each time, lol

For what it's worth this is my interpretation of the Perseverance.

Thankyou all for your comments, and pictures.
Yes i knew Frank did both manufacturers, with Caldercraft he did "peggy" then he got it right with "danny boy" in my opinion.

No Rob......Frank didn't do Peggy..........that was a John Wright jobbie after he took over the manufacturing base of Caldercraft that he bought from Frank........Frank didn't have anything to do with that one...........In fact I worked on the Danny Boy with Frank in the early stages of Mountfleet Models back in 1994/95 and before Caldercraft's Peggy was released

Hi  --  look at page 102  in Channel Sweep by Warlow  a good photo of the Perseverence`s port side, it shows the correct
davits , only 4 wash ports as built and other minor differences. Perhaps the best photo was by the RNM again showing
the port side but if I remember it had a lot more clarity.
Will have a look to see if i can find my copy.

Found this pic of her, she spent most of her life in the RN ownership in the CD department, which was black hull, buff upperworks and a 9" azure ble funnel band with usually a 1" white line top and bottom, the deck bulwark in the case of Chatham was a 3" wide Azure band around the top. She went for a short spell I believe target towing around Portland , she may well have been loaned to another department such as RFA which had grey top and black bottom. Otherwise she was mainly CD Chatham and for a short time CD Portsmouth.

C D stood for Captain of Dockyard, he was in charge of everything on the waterfront including all ship services, later he became Queens Harbour Master and Captain of the Port, abriveatted to QHM and CP. After the local Flag Officer he was the most powerful man in the Port and technically as QHM the most powerful legally.

By the way the fenders on her side are not tyres but standard round rope fenders , nicknamed apple rings, standard issue to all Admiralty tugs until the rigger rigging shops closed and privatisation.

Try this site, there is a good close up pic of her towing a barge by St Mary's Wharfe , HMDyd Chatham, interesting in that she has no funnel band or name on the bow.
