Prawn trawler "Blue-Bird"
« on: May 18, 2018, 09:45:04 am »

Hi there, this is a display model I have made for my Wife's parents in China, small enough to pull apart to transport in the luggage next trip over there later this year the "Blue-Bird" is 1:40 scale  ,comes in at 19 & 3/4 inch or 502 mm .
 1 . frames cut out.
2 & 3  All framed up and starting to plank her.
4  & 5  Planked up to deck level and ribs in.
6 . starting to lay the decking , messed up here should have layed narrower strips to keep more in with her scale , then I thought They won't know the difference  :)  .

I think I've said it before, but I love the way you build your boats. It looks like a full scale build when you have the boat on the building board/ slipway.
You are obviously very talented!

Brian I really like the way you do scarf joints, stealers and garboard planks.  In fact its really annoying that you are so good at it  {-)

Can you please do a bit of a tutorial if possible on how you work out how to do this - ta in advance :)

Hi Mark-T ,thank you, I'll have to draw a sketch ,easier than explaining how I do it ( as they say a picture is worth a thousand words) some times  :embarrassed: .
next lot of photos are,
1 & 2 . The decks finished and fitting the stanchion post
3 . Bulwarks all finished.
4 . W-house base in position.
5 . Showing the bit in the Dremel what I like to use to clean the curves etc in the windows.
6 & 7 . W-house sides up, now the fun begins, as my Lovely wants the inside fitted out ,  :o .

Amazing work! I love the curves of the bulwarks and naturally the structure of the hull. I echo Hama's comment about your builds looking life size in many areas. Is the pink bilge just primer or the actual colour?

Hi Ballastanksian , in answer to your question the pink colour, is only an undercoat, as below the waterline will be red.Next set of pics for the "Blue-Bird".I ,2 & 3 . Bracing top section of w-house as she will be having a lift out section to be able to view the interior lay out.4 ,5 ,6 & 7 . Being at 1:40 scale I couldn't find any model places that make the w-house items I needed for this model so had to make them .

You must have the most accurate woodwork I've ever seen.
You probably don't even have a tin of filler in the place!

Hi there, I can assure you I use my share of plasti-bond on the models , and the forward reverse gear lever is there, to the left of the instruments, next photos. 1 & 2 . back deck showing her sorting tray-brine box ,gantries and the split winch system. 3 & 4 .Fitting all the painted items in the w-house prior to cabin top going on. 5 ,6 & 7 . Cabin top on with her lift out section so as can view the interior easier.....

Hi there, some more photos of the "Blue-Bird". 1 . Ready for her 2nd and last white gloss coat. 2 & 3 . Painting all done on the hull. 4  . The trawl gantries as with every thing else will come apart for packing for its final trip. 5 . Rigging the gantries and trawl booms ,they lift up and down, but I dare say they will stay in the up position when in the display mode. 6 . Showing her small size beside the "Fay-Jay" 7 & 8 . The finished item, now onto the next builds  :-) .
