Trumpeter 1:200 Bismarck Kit
« on: November 23, 2012, 03:53:19 pm »

Just bought the kit.  One query and a moan
Query - Reviews keep mentioning a display stand in the kit.  No signs of one , should there be one?
Moan - In the paint list, Humbrol 177 is recommended for the lower hull.  Humbrol discontinued this particular paint about 2 years ago!!!  I would have thought that a new, and expensive, kit would be up to date !!

I use 70 with  19 to get a durable proper colour for the underside . I have look thru lots of old Humbrol cats and have not found 177 which must have been deleted a long time ago.

hi there

I dont know if this is any help, but this is from the Humbrol colour system book they brought this out a while ago.

For Hull Red - to blend it you need
Humbrol Number 60 x 53 drops    (60 is mat scarlet)
Humbrol Number 34 x 15 drops    (34 is mat white)
Humbrol Number 33 x 14 drops    (33 mat black)
Humbrol Number 99 x 2 drops      (99 is mat lemon)

The size of drops will determine the amount of paint you produce - sorry not sure of the drops they use - but the kit came with a dripper/syringe for measuring the quantities.

I believe the colour 177 went out of production a few year (maybe even 12) ago.    But for Warship hull bottoms now, personally I use number 70 brick red, but I do recall = picking up a tin of 113 mat rust - and it being very close to177 hull red.

Hi Guys,
thanks for your inputs.
I still think it bad that a "new" kit recommends a very old, discontinued colour paint.
I've actually found, in the back of a drawer, 3  14mL tins of Humbrol 177, perhaps the last on the planet!!!!!

Who am I to say, but I would surmise that this kit (based on its size, scope and scale) has been in development quite a bit longer than two years so perhaps at the time it was in the "blueprint" stage, Humbrol 177 was still a viable paint colour and still in production?

Trumpeter is obviously based in China; maybe they were unaware of Humbrol's production status or not up-to-date on their lineup and were going off of old information. Could be complicated by the language barrier and distance. (shrugs)  {:-{

Are you planning to build the Bismarck soon?
