Sofa surfing...
« on: November 24, 2012, 02:04:51 pm »

Anyone got any recommendations for a Tablet PC thingie?

I'm looking at Android as although better, I do think Ipad is way over priced for what it is.
... and I'm on a tight budget.

Now that the "new" iPad is available unsold examples of the Mk2 are available. When I was buying my 32gb Mk2 I was offered (PC World) a 64gb Mk 1 for the same price as a Mk2 16gb unit. Unfortunately it was a white one which looked a bit poncy to me.Worth checking out though as I still think it's the best available for all sorts of applications. BY.

You remember my thread on this, Martin...we went through all sorts and finally I decided on the new iPad mini...and I'm glad I did, it is brilliant, even with my swollen arthritic fingers the touch pad works superbly.

Plenty of memory, it seems, video playback spot on,  it's terrific for reading in bed, and it does everything I wanted it to.

And at under £300 from Currys, delivered in under 24 hours to my door, I recommend you look seriously at one.

Martin,

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is currently available at £279 or so if you look around, then there is £50 cash back from Samsung. It has Android 4.0.4, and will probably get an upgrade eventually to 4.2 - Jelly Bean. I bought one three weeks ago and am very pleased with it.

If I was buying now, I would probably buy a Google Nexus 10 - if the price was right ok2   but as listed it is about £70 more than the Samsung.

Beware - the Kindle Fire is not a true Android tablet - no access to Google Play for Apps.

Anyone got any recommendations for a Tablet PC thingie?

Most people have meaningful experience of the one they have, and usually say it's great.

Really you need to decide what you want it for as they basically fall into 10" and 7". The former can't be held in one hand for long, so need to rest on something. The latter can be held, but are a bit small to read things like this forum without zooming, which can get a bit tedious (I have a Nexus 7). One day there'll be a 10" that weighs less than a current 7 - but until then ...

Have a trawl through the reviews in the likes of PC Advisor and PC Pro - they will help point up some of the things that may be important to you. Eg. mine doesn't have a back camera or 3G, but as I never take it out with me ( have a phone with those things) they don't matter to me. On the other hand my phone is Android, so the Android tablet makes sense as I can use and manage the same apps for both devices (and the wife's phone) from the same Google Play account.

I know you said 'not an iPad' but have a look at the refurb section on the apple online store, some good deals there sometimes, or I went to the apple store in Milton Keynes a few weeks ago, and having never seen the point of an iPad (or any tablet tbh) I've come round to the idea with the iPad mini. It seems a much more usable size, easily fits in 1 hand, nice clear screen, can still get the wifi and 3G model...

Quite right too Andy  O0 was thinking exactly the same when I posted! but hopefully though have maintained "old fashioned" communicative skills that a lot of the modern generation have not learned, have no time for, or wish to partake in.

OK, back to topic - I have one of these http://tinyurl.com/c9o6an9 and (of course) I am very happy with it.  Docked to the keyboard it is a great netbook and on its own it's a great tablet.  Of course I am biased (and I've never used an ipad - tooooo much money and I just have a nagging feeling that you pay a big premium for the name - but some of the Amazon reviews compare this and the ipad) but this suits me and the uses I have for it.  Although I notice the price has gone up a fair bit since I bought mine  :((
