F14 Tx Battery
« on: December 03, 2012, 03:18:15 pm »

A year ago I bought a new Robbe Futaba F14  40Mhz system.  Originally purchased for submarine use, I am now about to use it for the first time for something else.   I had expected to just put in some AA rechargeables, but when I opened it up I found it is designed for a very special custom battery pack, which costs about the same as a complete Planet T5 system.  No doubt the charging socket can only be used with a custom Futaba charger.

Do I really need to spend Forty Quid for four AA shinkwrapped batteries with an special connector?
Any alternatives please?

Any chance of a picture of the battery compartment ?   I'm not familiar with the F14  (there may be others who are)  but I would have thought something could be made up to fit.

Cheers

If it's the same as the F16 (which it should be) then you need a 9.6v Sub-C sized pack with a Molex KK connector. Component Shop have just done such a pack for me - nothing like forty quid, either.

The tray is designed to accept AA and sub c packs.

With todays high capacity battery packs, AA is more than adequate, as you can get over 2A cells in that size which will keep you going all day long.

In my FC16, which is basically a computerized F14, I use three li-ion batteries rated at 1700maH, and it's more than enough. I converted the set to use a deans connector to make the battery packs easy to remove for charging.

Thank you all.  Armed with the additional tech info here I called Component Shop who are supplying me with a suitable battery plus the connector specified.  At only 16.50 Pounds + p&p that is a lot more realistic.

Although perhaps I could have got away with yet another Planet T6 Rx for this project, I really want to get the 40 Mhz F14 into active service to help encouage me to finish off two subs.

I have an F14 and pretty sure it takes standard aa's.

Unlike the Planet T5 which has a proper wired battery compartment for AAs, inside the F14 is just various voids in the plastic moldings.  The manual does not show a battery fitted, nor much info on the supplied Rx either.
I assume B/B is the Rx battery lead connection.  No idea what the OSC lead position is for, but channels 1 to 7 are more than enough for me.

OSC is the input from a 'Buddy Box' system used primarily by student R/C aircraft flyer types, Very useful.....I can use it to enable me to control/set up functions using the switching circuits of my transmitter direct into the reciever......no radio waves involved....no interference recieved/sent....ideal for static displays.

Needs a module in  the transmitter too!
Actually badly printed DSC (Digital or Direct Signal Control)

My Robbe/Futaba FC16 has a sub-c pack in more of to do with balance than battery capacity, I have a 9.6 volt 1800mah NiCad that's been working for years, easily get a days sailing no prob, could put in some 2700 aa nimhs, but on the tray, with my aerial, its not comfortable.
