In that any ESC has to present itself to whatever it is plugged into as a standard servo, and that any RX should be expecting standard servos to be plugged into it, yes.  In past times, manufacturers did their best to be different, but have settled for the same three pins in the same order, the only thing now is that some insist on a keyed plug, but we have files and can get round this.
Are you using a separate RX battery or does the ESC have BEC?  If the answer to both is "no" then it won't work.

Hi   the esc has 2 small leads with the white red and black wires.  one is labled "to programer" and the other "receiver"  i have plugged the programmer wire in the battery slot and the other wire in ch2 and a servo in ch1.  the servo works fine when plugged in with this configuration. So it seems more of a programming the esc problem.   ive just reread the specs for my esc and is suggests 4-12 lipo cells, my battery is 3 cells.  would this be a problem? Im abit new to all this!

Thanx for the info

I would think so as the the 3 cells would not have the voltage to get past the Low voltage cutoff point

The ESC lead marked Programmer does NOT go into the receiver. It goes into a Programmer for the ESC to set up variables such as cut-off voltage, forwards only or Forwards and Reverse, with or without brake etc. Its not essential - you can usually set these things up by using the transmitter and listening to a series of beeps.
