Funny old day
« on: December 06, 2012, 08:18:49 pm »

To the funeral of a kind of brother-in-law. Good chap (if you're a chap), D Day veteran (R Signals), mining engineer to the world, and all that. As seems to be common these days, family said what they really thought of him. Organist played  'Abide with me' so slowly it was like a dirge.

'Abide with me' was Gandhi's favourite hymn. Cue memories. Massed bands (600 men) of the Indian armed forces marching down in the Delhi gloaming from Lutyens' magnificent government buildings playing said tune as it should be. Atmospheric, not a dry eye in the house.

Back home, put on 'Time Out' and drank a toast to Dave Brubeck.

Hi Jonty
You never quite know what thoughts a funeral will bring on. I remember one where I felt numb on the day, and another (my Grandfather's) where I could celebrate him. I always found a drink and a chat helpful. Music is always a good idea too.
