World’s largest container ship at 396m long arrives in Britain on maiden call carrying thousands of Christmas presents

  • Marco Polo, the new giant of the waves, is five times bigger than an Airbus A380 or the size of four football pitches
Can carry more than 16,000 containers on board
  • Vessel is 51 times longer than superliner Queen Mary 2
That makes the QM2 7.7 metres long, I don't think so. {-)
51 metres longer maybe. >>:-(

Although the banner heading does state 51 time longer, further down in the smaller text is says 51m longer.
Does no one proof read newspaper articles any more?

Judging by our local newspaper, the answer to your question is NO!

So an Airbus A380 is equal to 1.25 football pitches?  %%

...That's a load of leg-room even in economy!  %)

They probably do via a spell checker which does not pick up any grammatical errors and the like.
Not to mention that the proof reader also has to be literate.
Books used to be dumped if found to be incorrect, now they just still sell them.
It even occurs in academia, slack standards, as anything now goes. <:( <:(

The short answer is no. Today, an article goes straight from the journalists, I use that description in its loosest sense, computer to the press.

Interesting to see that she was in Hong Kong waters and passing through the Suez canal last as well so, she must be pretty fast as well say 200 knots or so.

Funny thing about multiplying the size of things is that in conversational terms we don't really think the statements through. I mean if I say to you my matchbox is twice as big as yours then aren't I really saying my matchbox is equivalent to eight of yours?
