Archer Class crests for HMS Blazer
« on: December 10, 2012, 12:29:23 pm »

I am in the process of repainting a members model of the University Training Vessel HMS Blazer. I have identified the two lower crests on the mast, Portsmouth and Southampton city crests ( Friends forever %%  ) but am struggling to identify the upper crest. Any ideas what it is, and preferably images of it? I can then print them off and fix them in place.

Good find  :-))
So to me that looks like half flying fish and half scorpion???
Why a Gay class emblem on an Archer class? Any ideas?

Could be something to do with this when I go back and read again:

All 'Gay' class MTB's had identical crests, with name changed at top: Archer, Bombardier, Bowman, Bruiser, Carbineer, Cavalier, Centurion, Charger, Charioteer, Dragoon, Fencer & Forester.

No Blazer in the list, but Archer is there, perhaps a class thing?

Excellent find guys, many thanks.
Now if anyone can find the Pompey and Southampton city crests in a similar format that will save me much time :}

Is it not the University 'Cadet' crest..........not correct title I know but common on all of the University training squadrons boats.

It is certainly on all the boats of the class that I have seen, possibly with the individual ships name in the 'box'.
Tried to catch Blazer yesterday morning at 9am, leaving a very cold Portsmouth harbour, no sign of the little beast, only frostbite to show for my troubles.....

As I said on name the flag, the insignia on the funnel normally denotes the squadron the vessel is attached to.
Blazer's crest is shown on the link.
The university boats are in 1st Fast Patrol Boat Squadron.

The grey around the crown of the crest will make life easier for me when I trim around them and bond them to a grey boat. The crests will be about the size of an unchewed thumb nail when applied. Will take photos as I go.

Why not give them all around a thin grey band? That would make all the cutting much easier I think.

Might do, I will still have a sliver of white showing through at the cut edge of the paper anyway so I might not...it wont take much of an effort to print off a sheet of both though, so back to the keyboard tonight!

Are they just painted straight on to the funnels on the uni boats or mounted on boards as per pussers method on other ships.
Even minesweepers and the braves on fishery protection had the pennant mounted on boards.

The two city crests are on wooden varnished plinths/bases, the squadron badge looks to be thinner, maybe as cheap as a vinyl transfer, or hand painted onto a thin base material, hard to tell. I may have to make up timber bases now I have mentioned it to the outside world {:-{ . Wont get away with a bodge now!
