Union Castle Boot Topping Colour? (and other colour questions)
« on: December 10, 2012, 11:06:52 am »

Thanks to another thread on this forum I have my Dulux 'Gentle Lavender' for the hull. It's a non-historical build -- I'm actually building a model of the 'Golo' a French Naval coastal freighter, but wanted an interesting colour scheme, apologies to the purists. My build thread is here: http://www.rcnavalcombat.com/Forum/tabid/58/aff/566/aft/442881/afv/topic/Default.aspx

I've read that Union Castle boot toppings are 'red' -- is that distinct from the red colour of the bottom of the hull?

I'd also like to know what a good deck colour would be -- would the decks be wooden, or painted metal?

Thanks,
  Tom

For a relatively low key sort of ship like this it would be unusual to find wooden decks.
So you have a choice of 3 colours. Red, Green or Black. Personally I'd forget the green. Red would be my choice as it was then the easiest colour to make (and the cheapest).BY.

I would agree with Bryan, red is the best bet. However, if a ship was intended to operate in warmish climates then wood decks above the accommodation were common to provide thermal insulation.

Sorry, Colin. I just assumed the question was about the main working decks.
Of course your'e correct. Bridge decks, boat deck and so on would normally be planked. Indeed, if the crew lived under the focsle head then that would probably be true there also.
No matter. Even if the real decks weren't plaked, doing so would lend a lot of interest to the finished model. BY.

From the plan & elevation views of GOLO as below would suggest it to be in WWII vintage as I see a cannon [French Bofor :o ] on both the quarter deck & the focsle head ........... ;)  Derek

No need to apologise Bryan. I think a lot of people don't realise why some decks are planked and some not. There are lots of nautical design features that people don't always appreciate the reason for such as the inset deckhouses on liners plying routes in hot cliimates. The 'shade decks' with planking above were just that, to provide shade in the days before air conditioning. On many modern cruise ships the only open space is on the roof - and I mean roof!

Roof?
Do you mean the Flat bit with the Chimney on?

Ned, until now I thought you hailed from Netley...but now I see it's Humberside. Does that mean you once spent some time in Netley? BY. %)

Thanks for all the responses.

@derekwarner_decoy -- I should not have said late 20s -- the plans date from 1935 and I think the ship was launched or commisioned in 1933.

I will go with red, and planked for the the boat deck and bridge decks.

Two more questions:

- This is definitely a 'stand-off' build -- is there a simple way to produce a planking pattern?
- The bridge roof -- should that be white like the rest of the superstructure, or planked too? (or something else?)

Thanks,

Tom asks ....."is there a simple way to produce a planking pattern?"
Well yes...you could draw the planking with a black pen....but you will know it's not real... {:-{
Your local hobby shop will sell pre cut planking....it is very simple to glue the planks over a thin ply deck...you will find references to plank spacing & joggling here on Mayhem
...... %) & the best thing is will look real because of the natural colour tones between the individual planks
With respect to the bridge roof....yes certainly planked too
As Bryan says......[planking] "would lend a lot of interest to the finished model".......................Derek
