Moebius 1/72nd scale Skipjack
« on: November 09, 2012, 11:12:12 AM »

This is a 1/72nd scale of the USS Skipjack nuclear submarine, and very good it is too.

Measuring 42" x 4", it's an injection moulded plastic kit, with very good deck detailing. Apart from one or two bits of flash here and there, it's moulded very well. Plenty of room for a full r/c conversion, which is what I intend to do.

Ron Perrott has designed, and is building, a very special twin piston tank module for me, custom made to fit the Skipjack.

Once I've collected all the bits to complete the boat, I'll post up a build log.

I bought my kit from this guy on eBay : http://http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/gmscustoms?_trksid=p2047675.l2559  with no problems at all, the kit came very well wrapped, delivered via UPS exactly on time, and no extra customs fees at all.

Cheers, E2V...mine was under 90 delivered. The seller also marks the package up at a reduced value, so with a bit of luck and a following wind, you don't pay any extra charges.

I know the feeling...but seeing as how this will probably be the last boat I build, I can afford not to resist.   %)

You have a choice of a radial split or a full length horizontal split...not decided on that yet.

I prefer radial splits, makes the hull nice and strong which is doubly important with a styrene hull, and one buttoned up the join is almost invisible. A top and bottom is probably preferable if you're going for torpedoes, working sail planes etc.

You could split the hull in two places, one in middle, which is already done for you, and one slightly forward of the stern control surfaces so you can access the linkages

Going on past experience with the Dragonfish, this is how I'm going to split the hull on the Skipjack

Mmmm
Lot of work there and not woth doing  imo, considerably weakening the hull and limiting The dia of the wtc due to having to brace the hulls for strength with very little gain.....but its your boat build it how ever you wish to do so.

And remember HAVE FUN doing it too.. O0 O0

Fear not Sub, the 3" tube that Ron P has designed for it fits perfectly in there, along with three half bulkheads that position the tube and strengthen the hull at the same time.

Ever so slightly off topic Rich, but I visited SKIPJACK alongside in Portland Harbour in 1958. The crew laid on a film show for our crew (HMS TEAZER, converted WWII destroyer). The US sailors had TWO film projectors showing an unjoined film in their dining hall (luxury) whereas us Brits could only afford a single projector with interminable waits between reels, and screened in the cramped confines of our messdecks.

After being wonderfully entertained by the US Navy, the duty electrician on board SKIPJACK had a favour to ask. The steaming light on the aft sail had blown and he couldn't proceed aft to fix it, because the aft casing disappeared below the waterline for a few metres. I got hold of our 14' dinghy and rowed him round so that he could fix it. (Design fault?). %)

Certainly a case of the old design adversaries helping out the new. :-))

I'll never forget the inside of that beast.

I envy you that visit, never been on a nuke. Been on/in/over Oberon, but the closest I've been to a nuke was at the far end of Rosyth Dockyard, many years ago. The security guard on the gate was huge, no way I was going to get any closer!
