Home made cowl vents.
« on: December 13, 2012, 06:23:37 pm »

I needed 2 15 mm diameter cowl vents for my TID so I thought I'd try my hand at casting them.  The master was made in Model Board and brass and moulded with RTV rubber.  The castings are Polyurethane resin.  I'm chuffed with the result!

Very good !
I think this is the first time i have seen model board used on a forum build, guesing at the colour i'd say it's 540 > 651 grade ?
I fancy trying the high end grade stuff but the bank manager .. he say No!
Do you have any experience of it.. does it need much seeling prior to casting?
Neil, i recon you might know the answer aswell?
Good job !

Kim

essex2visuvesi...I certainly had no knowledge of the item either so I asked Mr Google...as below....very interesting.....

I suppose the important thing is that the master will produce a number of EXACT replicas  O0  .........Derek

 HI All,
The material comes in grades from 160 to 1300 651 being probably the most commonly used.
A great advantage is certain grades have exact match bonding resin so there are no witness lines at any joins.
The material is easy machined and ideal for the likes of plug production.
Attached a pic of two CNC cut plugs we displayed at the 2011 Blackpool show.
The small plug on top was cut into 651 grade.
Hope that helps
Regards,
Kim

I'm not sure of the grade but we do use it a fair bit and it always delivers.  I don't seal it but I don't think it would make a difference.   I'm away from work at the mo but if you pm me in about a week I might be able to throw some offcuts your way

Another way to get nice and fully hollow cowls: 3D Printing.
Here are mine for a 1:32 Foundation Franklin... I also make a few sizes available at a Shapeways shop, linked from:
