Holyhead Towing Co
« on: December 14, 2012, 06:19:08 pm »

Can anyone tell me where to find th efunnel insignia for the Holyhead Towing Co as painted on them in the 1970s.Im building a model of the Afon Cefni, which was the Applegarth Steam tug which was tragically lost and salvaged and evetually sold to the Holyhead Towing Co in 1972. Thanks Brian.

Thanks Dave. looking at and comparing the shape of the hulls it could very well be the tug originaly called Applegarth which after being sunk, with the tragic loss of all the crew was sold to Hollyhead towing in the early 1970s, [1972 I believe]and renamed Afon Cefni
Ive got a copy of the Aberdeen builders plans for the Applegarth and I believe that only 5hulls were ever made to this design so it a good chance that this is the tugboat Im looking for Ive got a photo of the Applegarth in her original shape and also one of her in dry dock just after she was salvaged and all the photos now point to this as being the one Im looking for.

Fancy you talking about the Applegarth ,I worked on her at the ship yard she was taken to for refit ,we did a compleat take out ,all machinery ,boiler was e rayed in place to find any fractures ,,non found as this expected she sank in water that was below zero ,and she had a full head o steam ,one of my jobs ,together with three other fitters was to draw file all the boiler /fittings brass flanges ,took weeks to do ,when she was eventually ready for service on the river again ,she had a totally new type of accomodation ,a few mod cons ,but it did not stop the aprehehention of getting a crew ,,hence she eventually went to become the so named tug on the Welsh coast . Ido have a number of pics of her in various stages in the refit ..
