Mayhem is rather like a family and at times like this it is most noticeable.
If Dicky were able to I am sure he would have an appropriately daft and oversized emoticon to say it his way. So RIP Dicky

DickyD! What have you done?!
Well, you've certainly shaken the b*ggers up today!

Not sure if I agree with your method, but there no doubting the result.

I was thinking how to give you an appropriate tribute and, whilst your avatar at half mast, or a suitable extract from your PM of a couple of weeks ago were considered, I couldn't think of anything better than 'borrowing' a couple of your bl**dy annoying smiley faces and using them in my reply!

So, you take care matey, I just wish it had been for longer.

What more can I say? Richard will be missed by all here on Mayhem, both for his outspoken manner and his readiness to help anyone who asked. I, personally, will miss his regular emailed jokes which always gave me a laugh, and his encouragement when I was building a model.

I would like to offer Gill and family my sincere condolences on their sad loss, a loss which all Mayhemmers share.

Mayhem will somehow never be the same without DickyD.

I have just read through all the comments about Dicky.
Yes he was all of that mentioned before.
I did have the pleasure of meeting him and his family.
He and Gill were devoted and I hope that Gill reads all of these comments in her low times.
For myself I would visit both of them, it is only 10 miles or so but for a skate to go visit a scummer, (Portsmouth FC supporter to go visit a Southampton FC supporter) and be offered refreshments shows true grit!!
My heart goes out to you all Gill, all your family, there is a big hole that will never be filled.

I was really shocked to read about Dickys death today.  I had quite a few chats with him on the phone over the past couple of years
and no matter how  low he was feeling he was always cheerful.  My thoughts go to Gillian and his family. I shall miss
his funny e-mails that he regularly sent.
A real charactor.

I've been trying to think of what to say, but I think Kraftykid's just about said it. I didn't speak to Richard that much, if at all, but I read a lot of his posts, and he seemed like a great model builder and an even better man. He will be missed.

My condolences to his family.

Sorry to hear about our loss, he was a true example of the spirit of Mayhem. I know he gave me plenty of advice in the past and whilst I did not know him personally I will miss him.
Here's to you DickyD, gone up to the great Model Boat Club in the sky where membership is free, the vertical mist is banned, and your batteries never run dry!

RIP Dicky, my thoughts are with all your family and friends.

Dear All

I would like to thank everyone who has put a message on the forum for DickyD.  As you can guess I am devastated at the loss of DickyD.  He ha been ill for the last week, but as we all know he was very stubborn and would not go into hospital.

I will let everyone know about the funeral arrangements once they are made.

I know Richard would have wanted me to thank everyone and also to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.

Once again thank you.

Gillian,

We will all miss him, but nothing like the way you and the family will miss him, every day. Our thoughts are with you. Richard would have been proud of all the comments made.

I wish you all the very best for the future.

SUNSET and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness or farewell,
When I embark; For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar

Farewell my dear friend, fair sailing

Re: SAD NEWS ABOUT RICHARD - DICKY D
« Reply #69 on: December 16, 2012, 09:38:34 pm »

Richard was a man who could never resist tweaking the lion's tail just to see what would happen! Sometimes this could backfire spectacularly as certain prematurely grey moderators will attest. I do wonder if his tilts against 'authority' were partly due to frustration caused by his dreadfully debilitating medical condition. He usually presented a light hearted face to the Forum but it must have been very difficult for him and I think he was very brave knowing that his days were numbered. He and I had our disagreements but we also helped each other out and I'm still on his mailing list!

There was however the other Dicky D who would cheerfully spend hours helping out both new and established members and researching obscure information on their behalf which enabled them to make the most of their respective model boating projects. The many kits he built gave him a great deal of practical experience in putting them together and he was always generous in sharing this with others building the same models. He was also a mine of information on the various techniques we use in this hobby. As such he was a huge asset to this Forum. I think this is the Dicky D we will all wish to remember. Richard was one of the original Mayhemers and his loss is indeed a sad one.

As others have said, I think we all owe a great deal to Gillian who made it possible for Richard to continue modelling and posting long after most of us would probably have given up. Our thoughts are very much with her too.

Colin

I think an apt and worthy post Colin. I initially wondered why his avatar used to state "so many boats and so little time"  It was from talking to him on Skype, seeing his medicine cupboard and realising that everything was such an effort for him that I appreciated Dicky was made of true grit. His family, his dog and the forum was his life, he lived it and fed on it, and yes, if all went a little quiet he'd soon try and wake it up!
My sincere condolences Gill to you and the family, may he rest in peace, God bless, Tony.

I'm shocked to hear of the passing of Dicky D. Although , through this forum, I knew his health wasn't the best but his passing still strikes the heart. Although I never met him personally, as is the case with most of the people on this forum, I had a certain sense of "knowing him" by his entries on the forum. He was obviously a man of great knowledge and not afraid to speak his mind.
I will miss his words on these forum pages in the future.
My condolences to his wife and family. May he rest in peace.

Dicky D was one of life's real characters, and he did a lot to flavour Mayhem.

He will be sorely missed.

RIP Dicky.
