Pilot boat with MAX-H OS 40 engine... advice?
« on: December 16, 2012, 04:41:20 pm »

Hi all my name is Rob and I am brand new to model boats....

I recently brought a model Pilot it seems in very good condition. First I have take all the old silicone pipe out and thrown that away, I have also taken out the really old servos and thrown them, then I took out the engine and fuel bottle. I have giving the engine a good clean, it’s a MAX-H  OS 40 (that’s what it say on the side), I was wondering if anybody could tell me what fuel I should use and what sort of starter and glow plug? I have seen lots about this but they ask about what power is the engine and I have no idea. The engine turns over buy hand and feels quite nice.
I will post some pictures when I work out how!! I will also need some advice on receivers at a later date. if anybody could help that would be great also any advice on what order I should be working in would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob,
Welcome aboard, The big problem you may encounter is finding somewhere to sail your boat as lots of lakes ban IC boats. You could convert it to Electric.

Hi Len and thank you, i am lucky to have access to a lake that allows ic engines so would like to get this one going before all lakes are electric, i would like a electric  boat, but that is my next project once i have completed this one.
Regards
Rob

the engine is approximatly 6.5cc , i would run on 10 % nitro fuel , the silicon tubing youve removed needs to be replaced , possibly your nearest "local " club using ic boats are BRISTOL PEGASUS MODEL BOAT CLUB  , they normally operate in bristol docks on sunday afternoons , jon

Hi Pilot
"Hobby Hangar" at Yeovil should sell bits for your engine (or supply a replacement when necessary).  The OS 40 is a good reliable engine which, in a fast scale boat, should give years of good service.
The output is about 1 kw (approx 1.4 bhp).
You will need silicone tube from the water inlet (under the boat) to the engine and from the engine to the outlet.  If you use a tuned pipe (unnecessary with this type of boat) you would also need silicone tube to and from that.
You will also need (smaller bore) tube from the fuel tank via a filter to the carburettor.
Ideally, the engine should be mounted on rubber 'bobbins' and use a flexible coupling to minimise noise output (you want to keep using your lake!!)  and you will need a silencer (altough an aircraft type with silicone outlet would be sufficient).
If you are within range of Bristol, a chap called Bernard Holder (contact details on www.bmprs.co.uk 'sales and wants' section) would be happy to assist you, I'm sure.
Cheers
