brushless set up - advice needed
« on: December 24, 2012, 01:48:19 pm »

hi all....

 stupid question maybe......

just had these land through the letterbox

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idproduct=29641

the  brushless motor has the 3 leads coming from it.....none are marked at all....all 3 are plain black leads

the esc is marked with A, B, C, so i am guessing i need to ensure i connect these in the correct order to ensure the correct phases are running in the correct order ....

am i right or have i made an idiot of myself ?

Just connect the three leads from the motor to the three leads on the esc in any order it doesn't make any difference which goes to which. If the motor runs in the opposite way you want then change over any two of the three leads.

Hi Mike,
Is it that easy? My motor has 3 different coloured wires to the ESC do I do the same please?.
Thanks, Happy Christmas.

yes len its any order with the wires , they are quite simple little motors , but deliver quite a punch

You can change direction of rotation if your ESC has programming, too.

Yes Len it's that easy!!
Brushless are just small 3 phase motors, switch any two phases and it goes the other way.
That's also why the speed controllers for brushless are much more expensive for forwards/reverse as they need to electronically switch the phases to give the proportional direction. The cheap forwards only aircraft versions don't have all the extra electronics that we need for boats.

Merry Christmas!!

glad i was not the only one !!!!. my ESC have no programming facility, they are supposed to be plug n play..... we will see over the next week......

i am just hoping i have not overdone the 2x  800 kv motors..... these will replace graupner 600 speed motors.....

i suppose i dont need the throttle all the way forward !!!

Hi all

I am learning all this new technology, so please cut me some slack for asking basic questions...

Am I correct in assuming that the ESC unit with three wires to the motor is only compatible with brushless motors?

Cheers

Thanks Dave.

Does the receiver matter in this equation? Or will any receiver talk to the ESC designed for brushless motors only?

in theory any esc should be able to 'talk' to  your receiver, you may need to look at the plug on your esc  lead to check its compatible with your receiver  but once plugged in it should work

Thank you Guy.

Generally speaking, are brushless motors the way to go when purchasing motors for a new project? What is the key advantage?

Brushless motors & ESCs are becoming less expensive, are quiet, create less internal static feedback to the reciever, require no diodes on the motor, requires no reduction gearing and use less energy to operate.
Hobby King sells very competitive BL components.

Thank you Giovanni, I think I will check it out at my local shop. Sounds worthwhile going this route.

You are welcome.
Keep in mind that fast boats require 1600KV inrunner motors and slow scale ships or submarines require around 300KV out runner motors.

Giovanni, that's a rather broad stroke to brush the motors with %)  The Kv required depends on many factors, as a note the bow thrusters in my 1/48 scale FFG are 11000 Kv

A brush-less motor is purely a motor that is electronically commutated, IE the ESC takes on the roll of the brushes, there are many ways to skin a cat, gearing can still be a useful addition to obtain high torque in a small package.

Someone mentioned that the reversing controllers had more components and therefore more expensive, this is not true, the ESC's are essentially identical in the arrangement of the switching components, the programming is different, the program just tells in which order to energise the windings, that's why its so simple to reverse the motors all that's happening is the order of windings energised is changed.

Biggest advantage of brush-less motors for me is the much wider range of motors within a size range that have different Kv ranges and the fact that all these motors are labelled with ratings that make sense
instead of speed 600 7.2 volt which does not give any useful information other than it has a nominal rating of 7.2 volts, no clue to its speed ?

Cheers

On a ESC what does the ring thing do that the wire to the Rx goes through several times?.

Helps with electrical interference between the motor and ESC, has a proper name but can't think of of right now (senior moment)

Could it be an RF choke?

Or called a ferrite ring.
