Another ESC Question.
« on: December 30, 2012, 09:15:27 pm »

I am running in my Tug, Twin Screw, a silver can Tamiya Motor. With a Planatery Gearbox, modified to fit. Runing a 5-1 reduction. 6 volt power supply. And running a 45mm prop.
My question is, I have been trialling a couple of Car type ESC, which I am not happy with. Due to the brake function between forwards and reverse.
In your best Knowledge, what ESC would you run? Also, would this ESC be suitable for a future repower of a 55T motor?
Also the Transmitter is a Fm unit.

Many thanks.

Mtroniks & ACTion Electronics ESC are highly favoured on here, MicroGyros are have a good reputation. Edit. Also Electronize.

Are you able to 'program out' the brake feature on your current controllers?

The ESC are unable to have the brake function programmed out.
Thanks for the links, I have had a look  at most of those before. I just lack the Knowledge of what ESC would be best suited for the job. RE: Current load, Draw, etc.

this might help..  http://www.alphalanding.com/rc-track/rs_540rhsh.pdf

That's a good reference, but is there any way to actually tell if your ubiquitous 'can' motor is indeed one of these,

namely a Mabuchi and if so, which one?

Boat people, particularly scale boaters, dont care about the turns of a motor.  Buggy people generally use a common supply voltage and offer a similar load, so a non technical way of rating motors is good for them.  As there is just so much room in a motor can for wire, if you want thicker wire to increase current, and thus power, there is room for fewer turns.  Competition gear is generally less than 20T, so I would guess that 55T would use a lot less current for a given voltage, probably running slower, but able to drive a 45mm prop direct without the gearbox.  If looking for a replacement motor I would be looking for a 545 type motor.  These have 5 poles rather than 3 and generally better characteristics for scale boats.
In all probability, any ESC with a real world continuous rating over 15A would be suitable.

Thank you all, for the replies. There is some great information out there.
What are http://www.mtroniks.net/ Like to deal with? Is there payment secure? Any negatives?
The reason for asking, is I have had my Credit Card HAcked when Buying off a supplier from here. Do not want it to happen again..

Ive had no problems with mtroniks but i am uk based. Look on there website for pretested controllers as they are cheaper. They are pnp free but not sure in your case. John.
