Staining plywood hull and decks
« on: January 02, 2013, 12:41:22 PM »

Hi,

I am just about to finish a Lesro Arrow boat and I was wondering about, instead of painting it, staining and sealing the wood directly?

The hull is plywood panels with wood rubbing strakes and spray rails.

Can it be done giving an acceptable finish as I would like the boat to remain as though it was wooden.

Any advice appreciated.

I have used woodstain [Ronseal - other stains are available  :-) ] on several boats with wooden decks. The finish is very acceptable and the colour is somewaht controllable by the number of coats applied.

here is a shot of my fishing boat. superstructure and deck both stained

Watch if using a stain first that all the timber has no glue spread on it as stain will not penetrate and look patchy . A better option would be one of the coloured varnish;s that are available these work like a paint finish over the top of any glue.

Thanks both.

As you can maybe tell, despite best efforts at being light on the glue, it got on so maybe the coloured varnish would be the way to go.
