CUNARD DITCH THE FLAG
« on: January 05, 2013, 10:23:59 am »

cunard have decided that its flagship QUEEN MARY 2 and QUEEN VICTORIA and  QUEEN ELIZABETH will no longer be registered in southampton,

they are now listed in bermudas register of shipping,

these liners now have HAMILTON  on there hulls,   not SOUTHAMPTON,  all because they can cash in on weddings onboard, (whatever next) %%

This happened a while back, there was quite a big fuss at the time.

Although the reason given was to enable weddings to be held it is believed that not having to comply with UK regulations for manning and other standards was really behind it. All about money really and Cunard hasn't been British for many years, it's just a brand of Carnival Corporation.

Yes, pretty much all carnival corp owned ships are now registered to hamilton, which they SAY is to allowing weddings at sea. However I think it is all to do with taxes and like colin said, to avoid UK manning regulations. Its sad...  <:(

AS said above. All because of an EU directive. At this rate there will be no merchant ships registered in EU countries

Flag of Convenience for weddings?
Who is supposed to believe this cock-and-bull story?
It's purely to evade costs of taxes as well as staffing and wages at terms of high wage countries with established trade agreements as a ship in the registry of such a country.
This already lead to mass changing of flags within the German merchant fleet in the 80s.
It became so widespread that the authorities were even considering then to establish a 2nd shipping register under the German flag.
But concessions that resulted in lower taxation of merchant ships have prevented a 2nd register.

This sort of thing also goes on in the drilling industry whereby mobile drilling platforms are "flagged" to avoid similar restrictions to those mentioned on above postings - don't know if there's ever been a wedding on a rig or not though.... %%

Ever wondered why such a huge country as the USA has historically had such a small International merchant fleet? The US gov't partially got around this by decreeing that US coastal trade had to be carried on US registered ships.
Much of the present UK owned fleet is flagged abroad. BY.

You can parallel reregistering with employment practices in the uk generally.  Everywhere firms are ditching employees for agency workers or short fixed contracts. A shameful practice I think but business seems to have few morals. Government of whatever colour is completely complicit ... Ok ok no politics on Mayhem .... Yaddah Yaddah  <*<
