« on: January 06, 2013, 07:16:13 pm »

the qe2 is very expensive to buy,why not the kathleen&may the only one left like her ,complete as she is .she would be for britain, not for the people with loads of money...only the very rich could afford to stay on her as a hotel..a shame but that is what will happen   tony

The Kathleen and May was moored locally here at East the Water while she was undergoing restoration, where I did this oil sketch of her. She became a bit of a bone of contention as to whether she should be supported financially by the local council and how moorings should be provided. There were even some hoping she might be moved to Appledore to be kept in Richmond Dock but that didn't work out either. Those talks failed and she moved on from this area... A shame really and I've not seen her since... A lovely looking vessel when she's under sail though ....

Thanks vnkiwi,  ....  Dave I can't remember actually how long the final painting took to do, I worked it up from some photos, sketches etc.. The thing with oils, as you probably know, is not so much the time you're actually working on them but the drying time between coats so I've usually got a few on the go at once.  This one was for a London architects office so I had to make sure the buildings were about right, hence why this version is a little 'tight'.  :-)

Hi Slug, agree with your sentiments, I would put the Kathleen and May up with the Cutty Sark for heritage importance.
