good morning gents ,
she was a whaledeck trawler in "civvy" life, but when impressed into service in '39 for ASW duties would she have "lost" the whaledeck to mount her Depth Charge rails or would they have been mounted high ?
the reason i am asking is that i  can find no pics of her in service, nor can i find any pics of any whaledeck trawlers in service.
I throw myself at the mercy of those more in the know than myself, and say thankyou in advance. ( yes , ive taken a few pics of the build, but only the rudder/sternframe and stand done so far.)

I had a book once upon a time called Grimsby Trawlers go to War, and am sure that either on the cover or inside there was a photo of the Thornwick......can't remember about the whaleback, but if you can find the book it might hold the clue.

Book arrived today, it will be a good read, but nothing at all on Thornwick Bay .

Hi Rob

If you aren't having much luck finding Thornwick Bay why not try a different approach. Search against images of the war years and the ports she most used. She will be photographed but not necessarily named specifically. I have done that on several projects and mostly had results. Don't lose heart.

from WW2 photos I've seen those trawlers with a boat deck aft and an enclosed stern had them opened up for depth charge racks and throwers , you could use the layout of the Round Table class as as good a layout as you'll be likely to find since none of us can find a photo of her

Thanks Dave, that was my thought some time ago. All the whale back trawlers, as were, seemed to become open sterned in service.
Ive got a Sir ..... plan (and a full fittings pack) so that is the way i intended to go.

Thanks all for the inputs.
 
After much trawling of various sites and readings of books, it seems that regardless of condition on entering service all boats were stripped of fishing holds, ( extra crew accomodation ) sometimes winches, military bits fitted  to a fairly standard pattern, and off she went.
 
So, its off with whale deck and on with an ASW fit . Im going to keep a winch onboard ( just for the extra detail and because the Mountfleet winch is lovely) and get on with building. I have smoothed inwales, made battery boxes and motor mount, drilled for shaft and fitted frame and rudder. No pictures yet, but a build thread soon i promise, just so others can see how not to do it !
