Nope it is a free upgrade if you have Windows 8

As Martin says it is a large update so looks like they have re-written a lot of stuff..

One wonders what would have been had you all stuck with XP ?????????????

Been to Windows 7, back to XP pro with SSD. Starts in 30 seconds great improvement.

Out of interest what size SSD do you have and how much room does the OS take up ?.

If you are into Smartphones and your main uses are social networking on Facebook and Twitter then Microsoft appear to have created Windows 8 just for you.  However, a desktop is inconvenient for telephone calls and camera use.

No doubt market research into what users actually wanted was opted out to the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation, who will be first against the wall when MS shares collapse.

According to the Hitchhikers Guide on Sirius Cybernetics based products "it is very easy to be blinded to the essential uselessness of them by the sense of achievement you get from getting them to work at all."

So true Derek.

Sadly the PC manufacture industry is also in collapse, IMHO mainly due to customer reluctance to take on post-XP operating systems.  Does anyone listen to customer feedback?   I will ask two questions :
a)  Why has MS never included even a basic backup application?
b)  As the world’s leading authority on their own system vulnerabilities why are we obliged to buy third party anti virus software?  It should be part of the O/S.

I doubt if O/S dissatisfaction has much to do with the decline in PCs - it's the rise of other more portable hardware that is the main cause.

MS has to be a bit careful with anti-trust/monopoly accusations with what they supply as part of the OS - look at the grief they got over IE - so a lack of optional packages is no surprise. Apple is a relatively minor supplier so can get away with being much more exclusive.
But saying that there is a basic backup in Win7, though I think it is just a disc image utility.
And you are certainly not obliged to buy third party AV software - there are a number of free AV packages including MS own (Security Essentials), which incidentally caused a cry of 'foul' from the AV vendors when it was introduced.

I'm not RAAArty but we have a 240GB SSD and Win7 takes about 33GB.
You do need to have a reasonable amount of 'unused' disc with current SSDs so it can 'wear-level' and use spare space when parts eventually become knackered, but we do perhaps have an excess of excess  :-)

From Disc mangement,

C, capacity 55.89, percentage free 70%
D, (SATA)  186.31  "        "        "   92%

D is for programs etc, operating sytem, XP, on C.

Hope it makes sense.

Ah! Windows 8 - perhaps you should have a look here -

http://armstrongeconomics.com/2013/08/22/germany-warns-windows-8-is-dangerous-is-microsoft-a-giant-short/

For all other versions of windows there's this link -

http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2013/06/microsoft-programmed-in-nsa-backdoor-in-windows-by-1999.html

What about giving one of the MANY distributions of Linux a try!

Operating system -Free
Office Packages - Free
Video / Graphics editors - Free
41000 other packages - free

There are plenty of flavours to appeal to almost everyone. For those a little scared of it...I recommend one of the Linux Mint versions,KDE is my favourite,it feels a lot like windows,is extremely elegant and incredibly stable, a quick demo can be found here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtuRC5jZT8Q

Linux Mint 13 ( old versions )- KDE vs MATE vs Cinnamon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW9CNk3V2cc

And for those that say...I need to run software that only runs on windows...There's a program called Wine that will run a lot of windows programs or you could always elect to dual boot during installation.

Please PLEASE people! Shed your misconceptions! Try Linux, download a version and run it from cd, see if you like it ( no changes are made to your computer unless you install ).
Like everything new.. there is a learning curve with Linux , and like everything else the more you put into it the more you get out.
If you have a new laptop....you need disable UEFI in the bios.

No need for anti virus or malware protection, but Linux is vulnerable to corrupted code from source just like any other OS.
However, it will not go unnoticed.
All the code gets gone over again and again by thousands of developers who have to modify their own packages to suit any changes made.
People will know very quickly if malicious code gets inserted.
I don't know how Linux could ever be compromised without a solution spreading through the community like wild fire.

just spent all day trying 5 different linux distro's on my desktop, 1 was wrong processor, another failed to run, an older version booted up to an unreadable desktop, - that was ubuntu, tried another couple of live disks, loaded ok, but selection menus didnt display properly, if its going to be that fussy I will stick with XP on the machine (all live CD's worked fine on my laptop) unfortunately I dont have a linux compatible version of my CAD software either.
I used to dual boot my laptop with ubuntu, but most specialist software I run is windows based.

I've just discovered this so thought I'd better post it to save some people a lot of problems  {:-{

Microsoft took its Windows RT 8.1 ( tablet version ) update offline until further notice on Saturday, after users reported that it resulted in bricked devices and lost data.

Am told by users and Gurusalike, which I was not aware of, that XP needs to stay as there are lots of diagnostics used in Mining Automotive and the like which run only on XP.

Well at least here in OZ. My Guru, Microsoft accredited etc, 'sells" win 7, yet when I complained about, installed XP Pro on my Win 7 machine.

So the question remains the mining and automotive users need XP, some are actively still sourcing and replacing laptops, for field use with XP.

They have no intention of dumping XP????????????????????????????

not just mining and automotive, in the electrical industry a lot of the relay programming software is only XP compliant - the new operating systems changes in the way things work make them incompatible with the interfaces to the relays, I had a similar problem with an automatic upgrade to internet explorer 9, it stopped several programs working, so I had to uninstall and roll back to ie 8, even though I dont use it as a browser, but still it messed up my software.

It then raises the question that as there is definite need for XP if only for industrial usage and there is a need to maintain it as such.

Really dumb marketing to shut it down eventually.

According to one report, there are 45Million users world wide who are not considering changing from XP after the cut off date.

The only real risk with keeping XP is security, especially once MS stop all support (and expecting them to continue free support ad infinitum is not reasonable).
Continued users will generally fall into one of three categories:
1/ Standalone computers that are never networked, or only to closed networks where malware is very unlikely.
2/ Computers which are 'supported' by competent users with hefty anti-malware systems to prevent infections.
3/ People who don't know or don't care about malware.

One would hope that industrial and commercial systems would fall into category 1 or 2, but sadly a lot are 3s and will probably come a cropper at some stage - like Iran's nuclear refinement systems.

There is an expectation that the number of XP systems will drop significantly by next summer, but there will probably still be 10 million or more active IIR the figures correctly.

For those poor souls unfortunate enough to have paid perfectly good money for a Surface RT when they thought they were buying a computer, http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/software/3474520/microsoft-yanks-windows-81-update-for-surface-rt-after-blue-screen-of-death-reports/?cmpid=HTML-N211013&olo=newsletter
You do have to wonder what they are smoking in Redmond when MS's own upgrade trashes what they claim was their very own flagship product.

I bought a Surface RT...what a piece of junk it is. I've lost the home screen, the display has gone completely mad, and the icons are so small I can't see them. I wish I'd never bought the thing now.   <*<
