Lithium battery charging - cauntion needed!
« on: January 22, 2007, 07:09:57 pm »

Dear All,

Not that I have any knowledge of these things, it seems much caution is needed with them.

What in informative set of articles. Thank you for telling me about this list.  Even Dogs biting them and causing fires.

Formidable at least.

Cheers...Ken

Anyone would think these batteries were

DANGEROUS!

If you have the right charger and fuse protection you can't go wrong.

Except if your dog bits it, or you jump on it, or drop it from a great height, or you throw it, or start taking it apart, or you have it in the sunshine, or in an enclosed space, or you decide to short the ends to see what happens, or you give it to children to play with, or you puncture the pack in anyway, or you're a complete fool with no common sense...

In the late 70s early 80s they wanted to9 ban fast charging of nicads at some car clubs because people walked away and left them on charge. (and nicads can go bang in a big way) but then they realised that it was the way forward ,and now people would not think twice..Peter

Dear Peter,

I hear what you say, and, again, I am definitely no expert on 'high-tech' batteries, but the Link I put up did err on the side of additional caution with this particular type of battery. NiMah batts. serve my purposes more than adequately, but like everything really they all need proper handling one way or another - these Lithium batteries do sound just a bit 'touchier' though all the same.

Dear Ken,

I put up a Title under Model Boats called Interesting Links that you might find of further interest - if you haven't already seen it that is? Don't want to duplicate them again so to save opers. space for the Mayhem site, but you will find the Title quite easily.

A bit late in the day, but have a look here -

Dont try this at home.  Not your home, anyway.

One day Lithium batteries will be as ordinary as nicads and SLAs are now, but we probably need to know how to use them safely.
