Sub levellers
« on: January 15, 2013, 06:15:47 pm »

Im looking for a leveller unit for my seawolf

The AST pitch controller looks tempting but as he's in the US and I'm in Finland I will end up paying some nasty customs fee (Minimum of 27€)
Does anyone on here know of any others?

Also if anyone has one laying about surplus to requirements that would be good too :)

Sounds like you have the makings of a tidy little boat.

What glue are you using?

tarvike-keskus.... its a bit of everything shop just up the road from my work.  It's a a cross between poundland and B&Q, not sure if it had been mis-priced or what, suffice to say I shall be stocking up.

It's got a very long shelf life. I use other brands of modified acrylic adhesive, but it's all fairly similar. Brilliant glues that stick just about anything.

Had a good nose through the box and plans....

Small faux pas on my part  :embarrassed:

TT neptune dive system uses 12V
Seawolf main drive motor 6V
3 ways forward

1.... 2 drive batteries 1x11.1V lipo and 1 7.4v lipo (have seen seawolf build running 7.2V nicads on the std motor)
2.... find a suitable 12V version of the 550 motor (needs around 8000rm @ 12V and a suitable pinion)
3.... go easy on the loud pedal

I'm not sure if the TT dive controller will run on a 7.4V lipo but I will test tommorow

No it won't, not without tweaking- it has a low voltage sensor designed to blow the ballast when the battery drops too low. I expect it's little more than a voltage divider (two resistors) feeding into the microcontrollers A/D input, so it could be easily modified to accept a lower voltage, if you're happy with that kind of work.

You sure the original motor does 8000RPM? Sounds a bit low- what's the gearing on that drive , 2 or 3:1? The Graupner 500E does about 12000RPM at 12 volts, and should be fine driving the seawolf with a bit of gear reduction. 308 hobbies still had some Protech mega-X 500 motors in stock last time I dropped by, which is the same motor but about half the price the Graupner model.

One other thing. I have a couple of low revving 600 size 12 volt motors in my 'motors drawer'. Not exactly sure what RPM they do, but I wouldn't mind betting they're close to 8000RPM. I can check with my RPM counter. Is there room for a 600 size motor, or do you need a shorter can?

Just tested them. One is too high revving, the other is far too low.

I checked out the Robbe unit, Unless I'm much mistaken I think the unit you have is geared 3.3:1 with a motor rated for between 6-9.6 volts. That's the Robbe spec. Couldn't find any mention of RPM though.

If it's good to 9.6 volts, then you may get away with pushing it to 11.1.

The supplied motor is a RS550 Ph 16Krpm @12V nominal so at 6V I would guess 8000rpm which is then mated to a reduction gearbox.
Looking at the plans and measuremnts I think a slow running 600 could be shoehorned in without too much fuss. The only problem would be the pinion, as it is prefitted to the motor and by previous experience these are a nightmare to remove without damaging either the pinion or the motor.

info quoted for the the motor was found here
http://www.kysanelectronics.com/Catalog/2.pdf

I need to investigate if an RC car pinion has the same pitch on the teeth.  Looks like it could be similar

If the motor is a 12 volt model derated to a lower volatge, then just run on 12 volt. Nice and simple. The Seawolf will just be a bit more nippy, but a bit of speed is fun.

Bear in mind that your motor geared down 3.3:1 will produce an unloaded shaft speed of about 5K, that's just about right IMO. The Engel 212 and Lafayette run at about the same RPM and have props about the same size, maybe a bit larger. They are nice and nippy, but you can throttle them right back and just creep around very easily. You have an excellent ESC which gives good low speed control, so you will have no problems.

I use microgyros levellers.

Only because you've never used an ADF2 from Canada

You're all just copycats- Mike was the first on the market with an accelerometer based leveller.
