Four-masted barque Pass of Brander 32'=1"
« on: January 17, 2013, 07:45:25 am »

This is my last completed model.    Completely scratch-built to a scale of 32'=1".
Pass of Brander was a steel-hulled vessel, completed in 1890.   In later years, she was renamed Bengairn.     Sunk by a U-boat in 1916.    I am currently working on a four-inch-long Welsh brig.

Thanks, not a very popular subject for modelmakers though.     Hardly ever see models of four-masted barques around these days! :((

Another lovely model.

It is easy to forget that the days of sail, overlaped the era of the torpedo.

Thank you for the replies.    In  modelling merchant ships (both sail & steam) I am content in the knowledge that they were, and are, a peace-loving profession, whatever the nationality, going about their business on the high seas with only "trade" in  mind.     I am sad that the merchant navy of all nations has generally been neglected in the ship model fraternity, when there are so many and varied types to choose from when it comes to ship modelling    I do not confine myself to sailing ships and here is one of my finest models of powered ships, the Asama Maru.

Works of art as ever and glad to see the pen has been modernised to match over the years  ;)

I wonder if the, again beautiful, model of the Asama Maru  is the same ship we used to tie up adjacent to in Yokohama ? This was just next to the Toyopet (?) Tower, she was then out of service and kept as a museum or similar.  This was in the 1960's I think.

Thanks Mike.    The pen with Asama Maru eventually developed rust and I had to discard it in favour of the plastic one!
The Asama Maru was sunk on November 1st, 1944 by the USS Atule!
I know the one you mean in Yokohama as I saw it when I was still at sea in 1977, she is the Hikawa Maru!

Apologies for not answering you earlier Bob, I have been having problems accessing the forum lately. It either times out or comes up with server error number something or when I typed out a reply to you it just sat there forever trying to post it !
Anyway thanks for the info, if I remember rightly the Hikawa Maru also had the twin stubby funnels in NYK colours. I will have to do a bit of Googling on her when the snow clearing duties are over, that is !

Very nice work Bob.   I also love the old merchant ships.  I have a passion for the old 1920's steam fired Tramps.  I kit bashed a Fish Trawler kit a couple years ago and made a static version of what I thought an old small Tramp that would ply the waters of the south seas in seek of trade between the islands.  Here is a pic if I can get it to upload... knowing this is a sail section of the forum, but couldn't resist.

Very nice! :-)          There were lots of little ships like that around the coast once upon a time.     Lot of them carried coal, but also quite a few carried general cargo.      Raised quarterdeck coasters!
