Hi All,

According to several sites on Google the thread (erroneously) described as AF is actually National Fine NF or Unified National Fine UNF. Hope this clarifies the situation!
Sorry I started it now......

Dave.

Inertia,

Sadly in Australia that statistic would be correct.

Not only that, but when you find one that has some 'boats', it is generally fast speedboats and not model boating.

Most, if not all, Australian based suppliers mentioned by Ozzie builders are mailorder.

Enjoy what you have over there because when they go we here will also feel the loss.

There is no local model shop,

the nearest is paisley model centre, which is 27 miles away or a good 45 min drive one way, ive been a lot as you say to support the fact you can touch and physicaly see what you want to buy...as opposed to reading a description and seeing megapixels and interpreting if its any good.

They are really helpful and friendly...however there stock is veru up and down and its always we are due a delivery in 3 days time....you check back and nothing has changed.....

im very much for paying a wee bit extra to physicaly see what im buying, and more often than not ill buy more than i intended...

if it was closer and there stock levels were what it should be and no "xxxxx" about when said stock is to be replenished...id use them alot more.....

there was a new one just opened up when I was in Ayr last August...close to the main bridge over the river, Chris.......has he closed down already.

Hi Neil, as far as im aware hes still open.....ayr is about 30 mins away one way....you struggle to get free parking (killing the wee town centre) no the model guys fault....his range is mainly trains and plastic revell kits etc..

i do pop in when in the neighbourhood, but havent bought anything off him, the paisley shop has a decent range of model boat stuff...good range of wood and plastics the paint is quite extensive also....

Dad and I are lucky, in that (In the shop owner's words) the only specialist model boat shop in Kent resides in Chatham dockyard (Where we go every fortnight or so). The stock is good, service is excellent, and he knows what he's talking about. It's called (fairly unimaginatively) The Dockyard Model Shop.

I am lucky here in Windsor having Matua Models just down the road.  They do a good range of general modelling from planes to static wooden ship kits.  So handy when I run out of something like epoxy or paint.  Good range of boat fittings and electrics, planking, ABS and brass sections etc.

We also have an excellent hardware shop nearby, Mahjacks, who seem to stock all the unusual stuff you can’t get at places like B&Q.

Even here is the US we have a few problems as well. I know of one hobby shop near my work place that closes at 4:30 pm, I can hadrly make it there in time to get any thing from them. I no longer use that hobby shop. Another shop can take two hours out of my day by the time I go there and get back home. Most of the time that shop has what I need the other times I still have to order what I need, and when I order I just make a large order and get a lot of what I can or normally use. Some times by ordering I can get a slightly cheaper price, but then you have to add in the shipping cost.

I feel that some times it is easier to order ahead of time and save the trip top the hobby shop and use that time to build on my models.
