New Member - Where to find free plans?
« on: January 20, 2013, 08:13:26 am »

Morning all,

I have in the past dabbled in many forms of modelling but have decided to build a boat for my nephew from scratch as I very much enjoy the construction side of things more so than the actual running.

I'm thinking something along the lines of a cruiser/speedboat type model and wondered if there is anywhere I might be able to find some free plans for some inspiration.

Many thanks in advance.

someone i know has designed a a plan for begginers in mind but the it isnt free. Its only 6 USD though and well worth the money. Youl get a link to download the plans you then print off the sheet on a big peice of paper and then use them as templates.

I have a pile of old Model Boats/Marine Modelling plans from the last few years.  I will have a look at what ones I have and if your interested I can post a couple to you.  Most are fairly simpple balsa and ply builds.  I know the first one at the top of the pile is an Elco PT boat for simple build.

One place to get free plans is here, ModelPowerBoat. You have to join and have a few posts before you can download.

I have the so called "Wild Thing" plans (Wild Thing was a .21 hull drawn by John Finch, the bigger gas plan was drawn by Doug ?) on my computer as well as a few other plans. If you want them send me a PM with a full e-mail addy and I will get them to you.
Wild Thing could be flighty at speed and the later Prowler fixed that problem.
Excellent thread here on RCU.

My "Wild Thing" from quite a while ago....

Well having spent some of the weekend doing a bit of researching i'm edging towards the 'Prowler' or '72 Offshore' designs.

To be honest i'd rather something between the two as the 'Prowler' is a bit thin and long and the 'Prowler' is a bit short and wide!!!

Ideally I want to stick to electric propulsion so either of the above will have to be scaled down. Is there a problem doing this?

Thanks again.

72" offshore has shown to be too long and narrow in reality, not really too stable. I would suggest the Prowler. You can scale the plans as you wish as stringer width is not really an issue when using an electric motor.

Most larger than you want to go but some kits are here, at RBC.
