I watched it on the iplayer later, just before bed. Leading inevitably to calls of:

"Cocoa, number #1?"  %)

Great voiceover I thought

Here ends the story of a ship, but there will always be other ships; we are an island race, through all our centuries the sea has ruled our destiny. There will always be other ships and men to sail in them. It is these men, in peace or war, to whom we owe so much. Above all victories, beyond all loss, in spite of changing values and a changing world they give to us, their countrymen, eternal and indominitable pride, and in the fullness of time a breed of men called Mayhemmers will arise to model all our ships and talk of cocoa kye and sherry. Then someone will raise viagra ......

You do wonder what the RN of the 40s would have made of an RN today with 10 subs, 4 assault ships and 18 destroyers & frigates - plus a few assorted boats.  :embarrassed:

A quick websearch later - the tonnage of the RN is less today than it was in (wait for it) ... 1780.  :o

These words from the end of the film still ring true today ( minus the bit about cocoa, sherry etc of course) If only the pratts in government would realize it too, and stop cutting our fleet to the bone. If they carry on, there won,t be enough ships left for a Sunday regatta, let alone defending our shores....

I agree with that! I dont think todays generation realise what a massive Naval power we were, and although we do not need so many ships in this modern age we do need enough to cover our emergencies. Its a pity the newer generation cant see the fabulous "matchstick fleet"  or the "Spithead Review" to give them some idea of what our navy was once like
