want to remove paint from fibreglass hull
« on: January 23, 2013, 10:27:15 am »

Have a fibreglass hull that needs stripping. Have removed some with acetone but this takes ages! An internet trawl suggest a paint stripper called citristrip, but does not seem available in the UK (it's  environmental friendly) any ideas what can be used to shift it without damaging the fibreglass gel coat, or sanding or using wirewool!

klunk I am in the middle of stripping a new hull at the moment - Had a disaster when painting the topcoat on a
destroyer (dont know what went wrong with the paint) but it had to be stripped so I am using cellulose thinners,
painting it on with a brush and wiping off with paper towels.  Has taken about a day all told but done over several days
because of the fumes - Definitely have the window open, but it does work and has left a nice clean hull ready for
priming again. just a light wet'n'dry

Hi Klunk, we've all been in a similar situation. I believe that there is nothing better than elbow grease and a few grades of wet and dry paper, used wet. No fumes and easy to control. With some stripers there is a danger of them reacting with the glass fibre.

      Hi Klunk.
can recommend the fairy power spray for the GRP  had a two top coat spray paints that did`nt like each other and had
to be removed.  The fairy did the job no affect to the GRP.

I have used Fairy Powerspray on an ABS Victoria hull and also to remove primer (red antifouling) from a fibreglass cygnus hull.
No problem with fumes and not too messy.

i have half followed stavros...

i damped mine with cellulose thinners, probably the wifes nail polish remover would be equivalent, sharpened a trusty chisel and scraped it all off

then a good rub down with increasing grades of paper...i used 240 then 400....

the thinners softened it all, the chisel scraped off surprisingly well....very few scratches to be had.

Most of these oven cleaners are based on sodium hydroxide- probably better known as causitc soda. You can get that at a chemists, hardware store, or ebay etc. and mix your own solution.

Also handy for unblocking your drains. You do need to be very cautious using it though, as it can cause serious burns and respirtory problems if inhaled.

most modren brake fluid is synthetic or semi synthetic , which hasnt the same effect on car bodywork / paint  . nitromors do sell a specific stripper for use on grp products , but its expensive . FAIREY POWERSPRAY   is available in most good sized supermarkets  at a fraction of the cost and works !

Klunk DONT DO IT there is every chance it will attack the grp, there is a specific stripper available for grp, failing that you might well be able to get hold of some Model Strip.Plaes do NOT use acetone either as this could also damage the Grp.

Fairy power spray is my FAV for stripping paint off a hull

Fairy never touched it neither did Mr muscle oven cleaner! Tried acetone gel it spat that off as well! I'm on acetic acid gel at the moment. Do have the panther stuff and that's a last resort!

sharp chisel, at the right angle will do a great job , wrong angle itll cut into the hull....i tried it on my first go it was relatively easy...yes i was nervous...but it saved an enormous amount of elbow grease...then use fairy or some other agent to wipe and clean smooth...

its not a popular choice i used acetone on acrylic spray, white spirit on oils and enamels....never had any issue with hull damage, i put the thinner on a cloth and used it adequately not to much it runs and drips etc....i also found where i may have had the accidental deeper gouge, the thinner helped rub and fill to a certain extent..

it worked for me, i may be critisised but ...hey ho

It's also excellent at dissolving aluminium parts, so make sure they are rinsed with plenty of clean water afterwards. The gas evolved during the cleaning process is Hydrogen so is best done in a well ventilated place or better still outside in a smoking free zone, H2 + Flame = Kaboom !
I'm surprised no one has mentioned good old T cut and elbow grease, much safer than Caustic, Acetone etc  :-))  Cheers Scoop
