sealink livery standard 1965
« on: January 27, 2013, 01:01:40 pm »

I was visiting my dad this morning and while we were discussing the travel agent models he mentioned he had some information for the sealink ships livery.
True to form within a few minutes he produced the following page:-

he has documentation tracking the sealink ships livery from the days when they were individual railway companies through to their Stena livery, some ships have as many as 10 livery changes, one example he gave was a rear funnel ship that had the word SEALINK centred on the funnel, but later centred on the hull.
the original sealink font was helvetica.
the document above shows the rules to apply the ship colours, we did look at the colours, but there were no british standard colours noted for the original colour swatches from the contemporary documentation he posessed.
If anyone has any queries for a particular ship livery at a specific date let me know and I can pass the request to him - while he has a computer he hasnt got internet access, so the response wont be instant, but as far as I know he is one of a few people who have documented the livery changes (he may well be the only one).

if you have more specific vessel inquiries, then I can probably help, its just too much information stored at my dads to generalise, eg he has an A4 file on each ship showing the course of livery changes, another just showing the history of the liveries, all in all the whole lot nearly fills their spare room plus the bookcases in the lounge.

Rail Blue is mentioned, that would be BS381C 114 Rail Blue introuced as a new colour in the standard in 1964.  Flame Red and Marine Grey are probably also BS381C colours too.
Try asking Phoenix Paints, they are the paint specialsits for "real" train colours and also do all the BS paint colours for we modellers in all sizes of cans from the Humrol size up.

I have a feeling the Sealink hull colour is darker than 'rail blue'. It's probably just navy blue. Signal red is a possibility for the funnels.

Grendel, maybe you can ask your dad.

Not sure what the colour was like on  trains but the colour in the 1964 standard is the darkest blue there. I have a copy in front of me and it is extremely dark.
Wasn't a train anorak so don't even know what trains used that colour.

Maybe the blue looks darker when it's on ships hull. I would assume that BR used the same corporate blue. I have found a modern font which matches very well.

While we are on this subject, does anyone know the shade of blue that P&O uses?

Modelling wise, Flame red can be substituted with Humbrol 'Buffer beam' red  not signal red as I mentioned earlier.
Humbrol also do BR diesel blue.
As for the grey, I don't know.

Is there any info on the colours used for the re-brand?
