Vinyl clear coat??
« on: January 31, 2013, 11:27:05 pm »

Hi All

I have a project I am doing and want to know if there is a clear coat (spray preferably) that you can be put over Vinyl (record). What I am trying to do is make place mats out of some old LP Records that I am gluing to Masonite. So the clear coat is to protect the Record from any scratches, food or water and to make it washable with a damp cloth. I have a lot of old LPs (200) that no one wants and thought this might be a good project for them. Any ideas??

Kind regards David

Hi David go along to your friendly Halfords and pick yourself up some of their laquer ...if it is good enough for cars then heck it is perfect for your table mats,My only RESERVATION on this is what will a HOT plate do it,BUT when I think about it,it is exposed to direct sunlight on cars.

He might have a long walk to his nearest Halfords, but any varnish that claims to be resistant to temperature should be just fine as long as enough layers are applied to lose the groove and present a smooth surface.
Even something acrylic like Johnsons Kleer (they say that its floor polish, but we know better) should do the job.  Of course, any heat from hot plates will go straight through to the vinyl, the varnish will probably stand more than that, but it will not protect from heat.

Giday David,

Mate, I would not be gluing the LP's to Masonite.

It is notorious for buckling when wetted. Masonite instructions, when used as sheeting for walls or ceilings, require the reverse side to be thoroughly wetted and scrubbed in, using a stiff broom before fixing to wall or ceiling.

A good 3 ply or similar would be a better option as a substrate/base.

Then seal as mentioned.

Yes, but think the heat of laminating will distort the records.
Heat was a problem with LP's. They had to be kept flat, or vertical, and cool, else any slight distortion to the surface caused the stylus (needle) to bounce and skip.
Also have  some old LP's in good nick plus turntable to play them.

Thanks guys

I will probably use 3 ply now that it has been mentioned as I think it will work out cheaper. I asked a guy at Mitre 10 Hardware store and he said I would have to use a primer first and then when he mentioned some other stuff I needed I knew he just wanted to sell the stuff. I will check out Johnson's Kleer and get back with the results.

Thanks and regards David

As Malcolm mentioned, you will find Johnson kleer in with the floor polishes.
Don't know if Bunnings have it.

Johnson's Kleer, more likely to be in the big super markets (Woolworths etc) under floor polishes, cleaners, etc, than Bunnings, but you never know.

I have to ask - What can you use Johnsons Kleer for in modelling? I only know of it's use a floor polish.

It is a very good clear acrylic gloss varnish despite what it says on the label about it being a polish.   Tough, waterproof, doesn't go yellow.

Thanks for that info :-)
I was looking for a waterproof sealer for a large area of Police battenburg decals that I had printed on inkjet compatable self adhesive vinyl. I had tried a Halfords spray clearcoat but it was too 'heavy'. I'll give this a Kleer a go instead.
I'd post a photo of the boat and decals in question but I cant seem to resize the photos small enough for the forum despite instructions.
Ta for the info anyway.

Here is what needs sealing - It's a large area.

Here's another photo of the large area I want to seal. I'll have to use a brush though because I do not have a modellers spray gun.

CPM1,
shouldn't be a problem, this stuff is self leveling, and thin as water. put on quick, and thin, and don't try going over to level off.
Try a wee bit for compatibility first. I haven't had any problems yet.
Should work for you   :-))
cheers
