Hms cossack build started
« on: February 07, 2013, 02:42:19 pm »

hi people to give a low down .im going to try an give a detailed build of this model an try an help future people build this model model more easy. ive had quite alot of respone an help to get a idea where to start . feel free to add opions in an hints an tips
i purchased a hms cossack off modeldockyard. from deans marine. with the motors an fitting kit . well today at 9am i started the build
firstly what needed doing is the line work at the top of the boat needed sanding all round
doing that an to find out where the line is . just above the plating is a line . you need to sand it too that line.  all around the boat
show im doing to show you the model all lined up an ready and half way through sanding

now the hull is sanded now after about 3 house of careful sanding
i then started sanding about a inch down from the top of the inside of the hull . this is too hel pthe wood stick
[URL=http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/571/20130207135048.jpg/]
after this i then started to wash the hull down with warm soapy water an abit of jif cream . an rinsed the model down an wipe;t down then left to dry
[URL=http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/832/20130207142246.jpg/]
. after three hours of letting to dry i  then started to draw the 2mm line down the hull

the next step in the hull build is making a tool to draw your 2mm line . well simple way of doing it is
1x 15inch rule . cut 5mm off the ruler an then glue it 2mm away from the end of the ruler . the end you just cut . this gives you the 2mm line you need
well here is pictures of the finshed tool in action an all draw up

just remember at this point . every modeller makes mistakes . well i found my mistake . i forgot to smooth down a tiny part of the lip by the top deck . well as you can see my old line near the top. you can now see all smoothed down the new line .

that is this time . i throught time for tea an biccys . an a good look through the plan an detail sheet just to make shore i havent missed anythink out .
( an of course make the misses a cuppa . remember keep them sweet you get more time with your model an no hassle)

tea break over ive now start glueing some strips of wood to the 2mm line an carfully making shore its 2mm . as we dont want the deck raised or too low.

[URL=http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/26/20130207154915.jpg/]

here also you can see a picture what i mean making shore its 2mm deep

Looking forwards to this myself.

However question - why 15" rulers and not a cheaper 6"? But surely someone has designed a tool for this?

Yes indeed - nothing worse than tearing down work already done.

Hi Shaddowfleet. I have no idea why this part should be like this. I have built a Deans Liberty Ship and Fletcher Class Destroyer but not a Cossack. I would recommed that you build a stand before you start construction making sure the stand sits on a level surface. Once the model is placed on the stand it can be checked for level using a small sprit level. A centre line will also help with construction. A visual check is good way of making sure construction is going alright, no levels or fancy tools for this operation just a good eye is all that is needed.  I have used these methods during the construction of my models over the years. The above items are for guidance only, if you have any doubt then contact the model supplier or kit manufacturer.

Check your build instructions. You should find details on how to make a stand for your model.

Hi there, slight distortion is quite common with F/G hulls, but easy enough to rectify, just pull the sides in when you fit the deck beams and all will be fine..... :-)) :-)) :-))

Hi there are you shore dude . Ive been thinking of
 taking measurments of the width of the hull plan to
Make shore im doing right . Me an my dad have been
 talking about the bow and thinking the bow is wrong
As kit of the front deck is wider then the open can open up.
Also this 2mm line you have to do . Ive put the woood where
Its ment to go . But im baffed how the deck template an deck is
Ment to fit in 2mm depth an lay flat an level againist the hull

Goos morning Shadow. With most Deans kits a little 'tweaking' is required with templates and plastic parts. best to cut everything out over size and then fettle them to fit, it tells you this on the general instructions page in your kit instructions. Just remember to shape the decks evenly on each side, otherwise the openings for the superstructures will be off centre. Have a look at Deans Marines forum, there are several build logs of their warship kits, not much on Cossack, but plenty on similar kits, all seem to encounter similar problems to yourself. The HMS Solebay being a case in point.  http://www.deansmarine.co.uk/index.php?topic=427.0   as the bloke building it says, Deans kits are 'modelers kits', with most of the printed plastic parts needing adjustment to obtain a good fit. The HMS Kelly build thread also flags up similar problems   http://www.deansmarine.co.uk/index.php?topic=227.0. Also, the plans will vary in size slightly depending on temperature and humidity, for example, on a warm, dry day, a part may measure out at say, 150mm, on a cold damp day, the same part will measure out at say, 152mm. So basically, you will have to make compromises as your build progresses.....
