M.E. MOTOR YACHT Mermaid ?
« on: March 18, 2014, 08:59:30 pm »

Hello everyone.  I am new to this forum and just getting my enthusiasm back for model boats after a long time away from the hobby.  I really fancy building something from scratch.

I stumbled across drawings for this vessel and am trying to find any information I can about her.  Was she a real ship, or just a concept.. ? Can anyone help ?

Here is a link to the plans

Thanks in advance

There was a motor yacht named 'Mermaid' built in 1959 (J Samuel White & Co, Cowes). Now named 'Red Rose'.
No photos, but here's a link: http://www.charterworld.com/index.html?sub=yacht-charter&charter=red-rose-2078

Hi Tom, many thanks for the link. After a bit of googling and having a look through the list of ships j Samuel White & Co made, the Mermaid along with her two sister ships, Siren and Stella were lighthouse support vessels built for trinity house.
While they were lovely looking ships they are not what I'm looking for.

I have had another look at the plans for clues. There is no mention of the draftsman only that the plans are copyright to Percival Marshall & co ltd (again draws a blank). The only other thing to mention that the plan lists power coming from a westbury 1831 (type not age) 2 cylinder 4 stroke ic engine. Which I believe is an engine popular with model engineers of yesteryear.

Here is a picture of  the trinity house mermaid now know as red rose..

Hi G-DEMP

The only Percival Marshall & co ltd I know of were publishers of modelling related books and magazines, possibly the plan originally came from their range.
I believe that they also did the Model Aircraft magazine, but that was a long time ago.

Mermaid seems to be attributed to A.D.Trollope

I wonder, could she possibly have been based on one of the Dunkirk 'little boats',as there are quite a few similarities with the 'Bounty',(1936 Camper & Nicholson). The cabin sides are different though, being more enclosed than on the plan, but it may be a good place to start. It's the closest looking M.Y that I've found so far.

Try:-
http://www.specialinterestmodelbooks.co.uk/
"The publisher was born under the banner of MAP (Model and Allied Publications) shortly after World War II. Founded at Eaton Bray in Bedfordshire, MAP published a range of modelling magazines including Aeromodeller and Model Maker and several supporting books such as the Aeromodeller Annuals.
MAP acquired the long-established Percival Marshal, publisher of Model Engineer magazine and a range of allied books (several of which are still in print) and building on these solid foundations, started to expand its book publishing programme, branching into more areas of the model hobby area as their magazine interests expanded.
By the 1970’s a large spectrum of hobby activities were reflected in the MAP list of magazines including model engineering, military modelling, car, aircraft and boat modelling in addition to film, photographic and
woodworking titles.
The small, independent MAP was bought out by Argus Press in the mid-70’s and the book publishing interests were hived off to become a company in its own right - Argus Books Ltd."
