M/V Bretagne under refit
« on: February 10, 2013, 10:04:07 am »

Hello everybody,
I have just completed a french lifeboat SNS 143 "Les trois grunes", and now it's time to repair my ferry. She is an old ferry from Brittany-ferries, but still in their fleet nowadays. I made this one 10 years ago, and after some exhibitions and let it in hands of a personn from my ex club who didn't take care of it, I had to refit it.
The scale is 1/100, give an 1.52 m length and 26 cm beam. I  repaired at the beginning the funnel which is very impressive on the boat.
I hope this subject will  interest  you.

Hello
The work on the funnel is very good. I do like the detail you have done on the rear of the funnel. I can not wait to see the rest of the ferry. There are a far few ferry modlers on here.

Yes, post some photos of the full model. I have travelled on her many times and she is a very comfortable vessel.

Thank you very much for your comments,
If I had to refit the main boat , I had to do the same thing for lifeboats. Each one is made in plywood, unhappy it's a little bit to heavy. Davits are made in plasticard.
To be followed

Hello Midori,

Judging by the pics from your refurbishment works on funnel and lifeboats the whole model of the ferry promises to be a feast for the eyes.

Come on, show the drooling visitors to your thread here at last some pics of the model in its entirety instead of just those cruel bits of homoeopathic doses.

Hello everybody,
As you wish, some more photos about the bretagne are coming. I have just received 2 sheets of stickers "Brittany-ferries". I would like to stick those this weekend.
Bye

Very very nice. Do you have a lot more to do on the refit?

Awesome model. Very well built!

Wonder how you managed to obtain plans of BRETAGNE from her builders.
When I wrote to Chantiers de l'Atlantique a couple of years ago in search for plans of another vessel which was built there I never have received an answer.

Hello Deadwood,
I get the "Bretagne" plans from both brittany-ferries and les chantiers de l'atlantique. The ship builders send me plans before STX acquired them. Maybe, after that,  have they changed their communication policy ?

Is the NORMANDIE the sister of BRETAGNE?

I have just looked for new arrivals at hhvferry.com and was pleased to discover NORMANDIE's GAP here.

Normandie is a slightly later ship than Bretagne and built to a different design. Bretagne was originally intended for the Spanish route although she has spent much of her time on the Portsmouth/St Malo run.

Normandie was designed for the Portsmouth/Caen route which she shares with her slightly larger running mate Mont St Michel which is similar in her internal design but quite different externally.

Brittany ferries have never built or acquired two ships of the same design!

Thanks Collin.

Meanwhile I had verified by comparing the main dimensions from their respective Wikipedia articles of BRETAGNE and NORMANDIE that the latter is slightly longer.
Anyway, it is utterly inexplicable to me that nowhere ever the length between perpendiculars (LPP) is stated, and that never it is mentioned which length is meant when a length is stated
(though it is obvious to me that most likely the length over all (LOA) is meant)
Not even Britanny Ferries' own website is making unambiguous statements,
let alone the vessel's builders who should know better than anybody else.

I require the LPP as a reference length for my DELFTship scaling.

But I took measures after having loaded the GAP image in GIMP and by proportioning arrived at an LPP of 147 m for NORMANDIE.

Another highly appreciated measure for me is the (volumetric) displacement, or the block coefficient.
But you find this even more rarely than the LPP.
So I have to develop the lines from some gut feeling, thinking that NORMANDIE's CB must be somewhere between 0.6 and 0.7.
So I will go by the appearance of the sectional area curve (SAC) during the fairing procedure to decide when to stop adding volume.

Regards,
Ralph

My interest derives from travelling on them many times over the years. I don't think that modern ferries are particularly attractive for modelling purposes although Bretagne and Normadie are better than most. Bretagne is a particular favourite of ours as we like her internal layout and she has taken us on many enjoyable French holidays. Arriving at St Malo at low tide on a sunny summer morning is one of life's really positive experiences.

Hello
Very good job for this model. I know very well the mv Bretagne after seven years on board. Now i sailling on the mv Mont saint michel. The big difference between bretagne and Normandie / Mont saint michel is the double ramp for most faster desambarq. if you need somme picture of bretagne tell me wich one you want.

Thank you everyone for your encouragements.
I must admit sometimes the "Bretagne" refit give me the way to dispair. I have done the same work 2 years ago with the "Barfleur".Since the last time, I've glued the mast, stick the "Brittany ferries", the ship name, and the bow thruster decals. My next step is propulsion. I don't know which kind of motor I need, speed graupner 400,500 or 600 ?, with which reduction 2/1 , 2.5/1 or 3/1 ? and which kind, gear or drive belt ? Does anyone know if a diesel sound unit exist for this kind of model. Lastly , I wonder if I make a mechanism to move lorries outside the boat.
Soon more photos

Great work Midori,

Puts my modelling to shame. The Barflueur looks fantastic on the water and I'm sure the Bretagne will look even better.
