Pond yacht build for Granddaughter (4 year old)
« on: February 13, 2013, 04:12:19 pm »

Fellow mayhemmers

I think that we can all agree that its never too soon to start boating. :}

My eldest granddaughter lives on the east coast (of the UK) ands visits the towns with boating ponds - so it is time to have her own pond yacht to sail

My aims are something fun, robust, easily transportable and attractive to a young lady.  It would be excellent if it was a good sailer, toooo

So out came the A3 size pad and viola, there is a little long-keeled pond yacht.
Sails are selected already, and were once a numbrella
Hull will be cut blue foam with (for me) a new covering of brown paper

This is one of the templates glued to card for cutting the sheer section of the hull

Next post - curses! I threw away my hot wire cutter and have to make a new one!

Instead of the promised hot wire cutter - some of the design thinking:

Rig will need to be low and low aspect to fit in the same box as the hull
Hull will be the length of an A3 sheet of paper - not too small, not too large

because its a free sailer the two sheets will need to be adjusted to set a course
and the whole rig needs to unplug for transport home at the end of the day
Mast rake is always good!

hot wire cutter next time when I have some photos

Hi Andrew, I'm sure your granddaughter will love her boat. :-)

For simple boats, have you looked at Seaworthy Small Ships? I've built a number of their kits, very happy. Recent increases in cross-Atlantic postage probably have made ordering US products prohibitive, but you might get ideas looking at their website.

Great link Brooks.

Personally, I think using a plan is a good idea as all the tweaking of hull shape (streamlining, centre of lateral resistance, etc.), ballast (heeling forces, trim, etc.), and sail design (centre of force, sail area, heel effects, etc.), as well as the overall appearance have all been done for you.

This will make life easier and prevent disappointments if things go wrong, or there are delays. It is very easy to dissapoint a child, or to be dissapointed ourselves by a lack of appreciation if we have invested 100s of hours of love, blood, sweat and tears on something.
